ESL for Winter Visitors to the USA Provides Unique Look at American Culture

The YWCA Princeton’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Program presents “ESL for
Winter Visitors to the USA”, an intensive twoweek, 30-hour course. The program runs daily from January 2  to January 12, from 9:00-12:00 p.m.

It is geared toward non-native visitors during their stay in the United States, and will focus on understanding and speaking American English, and American culture. Field trips enhance the lessons.

Participants will learn about American history, customs and manners; American idioms and
conversational slang; American cuisine, dining and shopping; public safety and the law; American social
events; and local resources and community organizations. Field trips to experience American culture
may include the Princeton Public Library, Princeton University Museum, local police departments and
rescue squads, the Medical Center at Princeton and the New Jersey State Museum. The cost for the
program is $360 (admission fees to off-site field trips are not included).

As a multi-cultural center, the YWCA Princeton serves as a safe meeting place for students to interact
with one another.  “We strive for an atmosphere that fosters friendships and promotes self-confidence,
encouraging students to take an active role in the community as citizens, parents and workers,” states
Diane Hasili, spokesperson. “Often when a family member visits, their relative may have to work or not
be able to fully share what all our area has to offer. We provide glimpses into American culture and
sometimes a “behind the scenes” look at how various institutions operate.” It is these unique experiences
that guest visitors find fascinating, particularly when comparing them to those in their own country.

If area residents know of someone visiting the U.S. between January 2ndto12th and would might like to
register for this program, they can contact Caroline Tompkins at 609-497-2100 ext. 329, or via e-mail at
ctompkins@ywcaprinceton.org. The program is open to everyone.
