Fall Newsletter from Creative Kids Place
Happy October!
We are off to a great start at Creative Kids Place. We spent the first week getting to know each other and talking about color. We did some simple projects with tempera paint ~ print making with metal trays and also marble painting. The children enjoyed these unusual painting activities and it was a fun way to begin our art classes. This week we delved deeper into painting and talked about using shades of color and different paintbrush strokes to create texture. We painted autumn landscapes, first working on our background, creating a horizon and mixing up shades of greens and blues for grass and sky. We used short, tapping brush strokes for the grass and big circular strokes for the sky. Once the backgrounds dried a bit, the children were given palettes of brown, orange, yellow, and red to create autumn trees. Again different brush strokes were demonstrated to create trees and leaves. It was wonderful to hear the many different ideas the children had about how their trees should look and what was going on in their paintings ~ wind, leaves falling, trees almost bare. Next week we will be using watercolors and stenciling with real leaves.
In the Monday late afternoon art class for ages 6 to 9 our first project was a simple foil drawing. The children used pencils to sketch a design or picture into a piece of aluminum foil. Then they used sharpie markers to color in their drawing. The foil gives the marker a metallic sheen and also makes a lovely shiny silver background. This week they started autumn landscapes with acrylic paint and canvas and completed their backgrounds using different shading and brush stroke techniques. They also started a leaf pastel drawing project, tracing several real leaves onto white paper. This week they will finish their autumn landscapes and use pastels to complete their leaf design.
