School is back in session and fall sports are getting started. Fall is a time for football, soccer, cross country, field hockey, and standing on the sidelines with warm cups of coffee. When you think of fall activities, do swim lessons come to mind? Probably not for more people. The summer season just ended, and you're sad that the pool is closed (especially when we have September heat waves). If you were to get lessons for your kids, you probably did them in the spring BEFORE the pool opened so your kids could enjoy the water. It's common for parents to work up to pool season by fitting in a few weeks of lessons in May and early June (I even did that with my older girls to get them refreshed and ready for swim team), but you could actually have a much more confident and skilled swimmer if you start lessons earlier or do them regularly through the year. It makes sense if you think about that whole "summer slide" as it relates to academic work. When kids don't do any reading or math over the summer, their skills are not as fresh when they go back to school. The same is true with a skill like swimming. According to a recent blog post by Five Star Swim School in Princeton, "If one attends swim classes only one season a year, they may advance in that period only to lose all of their progress the following year. Lack of improvement can be discouraging to students and may cause them to consider giving up on swim lessons. Educated swimming is an important skill that could save a life and should be focused on more than once a year."
