HOME SCHOOLING
Sometimes parents choose to home-school their children, a choice that requires
time, commitment, perseverence, and patience. In spite of this, a million children
are now home-schooled every year. For information, contact the following groups for
support, information, legal issues, meetings, and idea exchanges. Your library is
also an excellent resource.

Trenton's Religious Life
Trenton is a city of churches, mosques, and synagogues. On every block, you are likely
to find a sign welcoming passers-by to a weekly service. Most have a rich selection
of activities, including many programs for children and access to important resources
for both children and adults. Here are the numbers of some of the denominations in
Trenton, showing the rich diversity within the religious community.

Trenton Animal Shelter
OWNING A PET
When a human adopts a dog, cat, and other pet, a contract is informally struck.
The pet offers loyalty, companionship, and love; the owner offers food, water, shelter,
medical care, and friendship. When both sides honor the bargain, a wonderful bond
forms; if they don't, the relationship falters, and both sides suffer, especially
the pet. Before adopting a pet, consider two important facts: the annual cost to
keep a cat or a dog is several hundred dollars, not including medical bills; and
the natural life span of cats and dogs is 10 to 20 years, so adopting a young pet
is a long-term commitment.
CARING FOR A PET
Dogs need to be exercised daily, preferably on a walk (on a leash) in a park
or around the neighborhood. A dog run or small back yard is not enough. A walk is
also a time for companionship. Summer and winter, they should always have a large
bowl filled with clean water. Shade and shelter all year around are critical. Just
as with people, animals need protection from the elements. Pets need as much of your
attention and affection as you can give. A lonely, neglected pet will display bad
behavior. If you rent, consider that you might move and will not be allowed to have
pets at your next home. Periodic rabies shots for dogs is mandatory. Free shots are
available. Other inoculations and yearly visits to a veterinarian for cats and dogs
are very important.
TRENTON ANIMAL SHELTER
An excellent source for a pet is the Trenton Animal Shelter located at 72 Escher
Street behind the Trentonian on Perry Street. Recently, with your help, the adoption
rate has increased from 40 to 85 percent. Both the pets and their new owners are
very pleased.
Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm; Wednesday, 12 noon
to 3:00 pm. On Saturdays, from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm, pets may be adopted at PetsMart
in the Nassau Park Shopping Center (near Home Depot) on Route 1 in West Windsor.
To volunteer to help in this service, call William Church at 609-989-3254.
The shelter rescues stray and unwanted animals within city borders. All incoming
strays receive a complete physical by an on-site veterinarian as well as shots for
canine and feline viruses. Adoptable animals, 6 months of age and older, are vaccinated
for rabies at the shelter. Those adopting from the shelter receive pamphlets on pet
care, and, when available, small care packages for the adopted animal. Adoption fees
are $30 for dogs and $20 for cats. Licensing fees are $9.00 for altered dogs and
$12.00 for unaltered dogs.
Please help reduce the number of unwanted dogs and cats in Trenton by making sure
your new pet is spayed or neutered. Low cost spay/neuter vouchers are available at

Civic Associations
Strengthen Your Neighborhood
Civic and crime watch associations are important for the health and happiness of
a neighborhood. Several steps are needed to set up such a group, and, with support
from other established associations and the City Department of Public Safety, a strong,
effective organization will result. Here are some guidelines for setting up a neighborhood
association:
- A core group of neighbors should meet to discuss the needs of the neighborhodd.
At this meeting, you should: 1) strategize how to get the support of highly respected
and older residents of the neighborhood; 2) design a program to alert neighbors to
the formation of the association, including a flyer and its distribution; 3) designate
one person to contact City Hall at 609-989-3371 for initial help in organizing; 4)
schedule the date for the next meeting.
- When the City is contacted, experienced support people will provide initial guidance
with the setup of the association and with contacts in other civic associations that
are already established.
- The flyer should be delivered by hand by people who are familiar with the issues
and who can encourage neighbors to come to the next meeting. The time, place, and
date of the next meeting should be clearly stated in the flyer. One-on-one contact
is important-simply leaving a flyer in the door is not effective.
- At the first official meeting, which might be in a church or community center,
attendees should elect officers or block captains. You should develop a plan for
creating a safer neighborhood and designate those responsible for taking steps. Updates
on action should be reported at each subsequent meeting. A list of specific concerns
should be drawn up and reported to the City.
- The time and place of next meeting should always be decided on before a meeting
is adjourned. Some meetings might feature a guest speaker from the City, the police,
or another civic association. Meetings should be no more than an hour long, and the
best time is usually before dinner, about 6:00 pm.
- This is a great opportunity to join with neighbors and friends to enjoy each
other's company and to energize your area into a safer, more pleasant neighborhood.
Good luck, and use all the help that is available to you!

* Marked by History
Dozens of bronze plaques are mounted on walls, pillars, and posts throughout New
Jersey's capital. Though dulled with time and sometimes hard to read, they serve
as small windows into past years. They mark the passage of great industries and wars;
they locate former homes and shops; they herald neighborhoods alive with the past
and the present. * On the corner of Hamilton and Chestnut is a six-foot granite pillar
with a plaque which reads "Route of Washington's march by night from Trenton
to Princeton and victory. January 3, 1777. Erected 1914." Similar pillars and
plaques stand sentry take their positions on the march northward: on the corner of
Hamilton and South Broad, beneath the tree in the middle of Quakerbridge Road and
elsewhere. They mark the stealthy midnight escape by the Continental army, while
the British waited on the bank of the Assunpink to attack at dawn. Only with the
first light did the Redcoats realize that the rebels were gone. * Near the NJ State
House, a plaque reads, "Old Steel Mill. Here, in 1750, Benjamin Yard made steel
in an iron works founded by Isaac Harrow 1733-34. The mill was on Petty's Run which
now flows underground. It was one of the earliest steel mills in American and a forerunner
of the great industries of Trenton." In those few words, there are several volumes
of stories and histories. The site of the steel mill has recently been excavated,
but Petty's Run still flows under the streets to the Delaware. * Other markers salute
John Fitch's gun shop and early steamboat, the 1796 Emlen family house, the Delaware
and Raritan Canal, the Swamp Angel (a Civil War cannon from South Carolina) and more.
Stop and read next time you pass one.
Volunteering

Fair and represent a sampling of volunteer needs. Other organizations, including
many of those listed elsewhere in YO! also depend on citizen involvement. If you,
