The Anne Reid '72 Art Gallery At Princeton Day School
The Anne Reid '72
Art Gallery At
Princeton Day School
Princeton Day School has had a long tradition with superb quality in the arts from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. While the arts have always played a major role in the lives of our students, the Anne Reid '72 Art Gallery has exhibited high quality art work since its inception in the late 1970's. The gallery, which is open to the public, has had an exciting stable of artists this fall, beginning with Princeton Day School architecture teacher David Burkett. Mr. Burkett's beautiful silhouette portrait exhibition was followed by New York City artist Michael Waugh's stunning portraits of the 1880 Harvard and Yale crew teams. Mr. Waugh's drawings are elegantly drawn using hand written text to create imagery.

The Harvard/Yale portraits were created solely by Mr. Waugh using text from Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. For the first half of December, the gallery had a large retrospective of oil paintings by Bette Blank. Ms. Blank's colorful interiors come through the courtesy of her gallery, the Adam Baumgold Gallery in New York City.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF PRINCETON UNIVERSITY
From January 11 through February 3rd, 2011 the exhibition Campus Themes: The Architecture of Princeton University will be on view. This exciting exhibition, created by Princeton University Architect Ron McCoy, FAIA, will feature campus planning from the University's earliest pre-revolutionary days through today. We are very glad to have the opportunity to host this exhibition which holds significant value to the both the Princeton University campus and the wider community at large. Mr. McCoy will display many aspects of the University's architecture including photographs of campus public art, architectural modulation through computerized drawings, green buildings and site designs, architectural drawings and renderings beginning in the early 18th Century, technologies defining some of the University's complex sustainable initiatives, landscape architecture, architectural models of site plans and rare campus videos to illustrate the multi-dimensional aspects of campus planning.

THE GALLERY CLUB
Upper School students have opportunities to choose from over forty clubs at the school. The Gallery Club is one of these clubs whose objectives are met as students meet with artists, encourage fellow students to come to gallery events, arrange set up for the openings, host openings and host artists talks throughout the year. Students in the club interview artists, write reviews in the school paper, video artists talks and link the videos the school website. Creating a dynamic between school disciplines, students and teachers use art work in the gallery as inspiration for writing projects in English classes as was the case with Raul Colon's New Yorker cover illustration exhibition for Kate Westhaver's English course The New Yorker and also for Judy Michaels' and Mary Williams' poetry courses with The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. In early December, the Gallery Club students invited New Jersey based artist Mel Leipzig to give a talk, which was highly attended. Gallery Club students have invited Mr. Leipzig to return in the fall of 2011 for a solo retrospective when he will exhibit many portraits including a portrait of a Co-Head of the Gallery Club. Looking ahead to February 2011, Carol Hanson and Stacie Speer Scott will exhibit paintings, drawings and monotypes which describe personal stories for both. Hanson's exquisite oil paintings will be shown in conjunction with Scott's textured, layered and painted collages.

Before May, when students will exhibit their own work in the gallery, author and illustrator Steve Jenkins will recreate his Boulder, Colorado studio in the gallery and he will lend the gallery never-before exhibited collages from some of his recent books including Down, Down, Down. Mr. Jenkins comes to Princeton Day School through the fabulous yearly program, Imagine the Possibilities. We encourage you to visit the gallery many times during the year.
