The Gallery at Chapin will feature Dan Fanaldi and his collection of large oil paintings in an exhibit entitled “People In My Life” from January 3 to January 31, 2013. A reception for the artist will be held on Wednesday January 9, 2013 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Dan Finaldi made a decision when he was eighteen to commit to the visual arts. He realized when he attended the local community college in Rochester, New York, that his life calling was to be a painter. He received a BFA from SUNY and a MFA from Brooklyn College. It was at Brooklyn where he found mentors; Lois Dodd, Lennart Anderson and Phillip Pearlstein who guided his development into painterly realism with the focus on the figure. Lois Dodd introduced him to well known figurative artist Mel Leipzig who also became his mentor.
This exhibition will express the visual delight Finaldi experiences when he paints people.
“The figure,” explains Finaldi, “has dominated my interest as a painter for most all of my mature life. If I had to articulate what I am trying to achieve in my efforts, I would say it is the warmth that I encounter with painting people. A landscape with a figure becomes a story. A landscape with a person with whom I have a friendship is even more personal. The same is true with an interior or with a still life.”
In the early 90’s, Finaldi moved to New Jersey where he is an art teacher at Freehold High School. He is a recipient of The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Fellowship, member of the Princeton Art Alliance and his artwork has been accepted in numerous regional and prestigious national juried exhibits.
