Women's History Month Programs @Princeton Public LIbrary

Programs that focus on important women from the past and issues relevant to women today will be held during March at Princeton Public Library in celebration of Women’s History Month. In addition to a resource guide available on the library’s website, featuring book lists for all ages and resources for educators, programs include:

 

Feminist Book Discussion Group

Monday, March 3, 6 p.m.

The group discusses “Biting the Hand: Growing Up Asian in Black and White America” by Julia Lee. This book group brings people together to read, analyze, and chat about contemporary feminist texts through the lens of five topics: creation, care, community, climate, and computation. HerStory Movie Series

Biopics and feature films depicting true stories about the lives of women are screened on Tuesdays at 2 p.m. in the Community Room. Light refreshments will be served.

 

March 4: “Coal Miner’s Daughter” featuring Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn

March 11: “Queen Christina” featuring Greta Garbo

March 18: “Respect” featuring Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin

March 25: “A League of Their Own” featuring Geena Davis as a player in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League

 

“Black Women and the New Jersey Civil Rights Movement"

Monday, March 3, 7 p.m.

Hettie V. Williams of Monmouth University gives a presentation as part of Continuing Conversations on Race presented in partnership with Not in Our Town Princeton. This program is virtual. Register for Zoom link.

 

Kids Take and Make: Airplane Kit

Saturday, March 8

Kids are invited to pick up a kit to make an airplane at home while supplies last and to read about the youngest woman in history, and the first woman from Afghanistan, to fly around the world in a single-engine aircraft in “Fly, Girl, Fly! Shaesta Waiz Soars Around the World.”

Monday, March 17, 7 p.m.

Joanne Ramos, author of "The Farm" will be joined by Samantha Skey, CEO of SHE Media, to discuss the role and possibilities of art in times of polarization. Part of the Annual Phyllis Marchand Leadership Lecture series. Registration requested. Community Room

 

Finding Women Ancestors in New Jersey

Thursday, March 27, 6:30 p.m.

New Jersey State Library genealogy librarian Regina Fitzpatrick shares strategies for locating New Jersey women in records collections from the Colonial era to the 20th century. On Zoom; register for link.

Thursday, March 21, 6 p.m.

The author discusses her book "Over the Influence" with Jane Greenway Carr and examines how social media affects women. Presented in partnership with the Phyllis Marchand Leadership Lecture Fund. Community Room

 

Film: "The Color Purple"

Friday, March 22: 4 p.m.

Based on the stage musical adaptation of Alice Walker's novel, this 2023 musical drama spans decades in the life of an African American woman living in the American South during the early 1900s. PG13. 2 hours, 21 minutes. Community Room

 

Book Brunch: Rachel Shteir

Sunday, March 24, 11 a.m.

The author is joined by Maria DiBattista to discuss her book "Betty Friedan: Magnificent Disrupter." Doors open at 10:45 a.m. for coffee and pastries; talk begins at 11 a.m. Book signing to follow.
