of the Big Apple. Yes, the City is BACK and Jane says to get there STAT for a daytrip. This is the perfect time to go - after hot, sticky summer and before crowded, cold holiday. Broadway, Festivals, Knicks, Rangers, Indoor Dining, Museums, Stores, and more are at the ready. There’s only one hitch, you will need to show proof that you have a brain and are vaccinated. Proof of vax is a must for indoor dining, museums, and Broadway. Bring masks because they are a must, too - most shops are requiring them.
Jane says if she was going to the city, this is what she would do . . .
If you Don’t Mind Crowds:
Take Public Transport – download the NJ Transit App and Park Mobile (so parking at Princeton Junction is easy breezy) and giddy up.
ART – all museums and galleries are OPEN - proof of VAX required. Most need reservations so go online and book it. Jane says to run, not walk to these exhibits: Jasper Johns at The Whitney, Metropolitan Museum of Art Roof Garden (fun for kids with Big Bird installation on view) and for the adults @The Met - Dutch Masterpieces.
Broadway – Get tix for Hamilton (still going STRONG) and Tina: The Tina Turner Musical - the new, hot show. Jeff Daniels is still playing Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird and if you are like jane says and a HUGE Talking Heads fan, David Byrne’s American Utopia is at the St. James - BOOK IT and start grooving.
Shopping – The Grand Bazaar - curated outdoor market - like a Flea, but better because it's in the best city in the world.
The Market Line – underground food bazaar on the LES (lower east side :))
Harry Potter - retail mecca for the uber fan - you need to book in advance
Hudson Yards – the Edge observation deck is now open and the shops and cool eateries are too. The Vessel is closed – you know why :(
If you Need More Space and Less Face(s):
Drive and Park – holland tunnel – drive through it and google "parking garages near me" - boom. Uber or cab it from there. Lincoln Tunnel – ditto.
Little Island - will take you 20 minutes to walk/instagram it - then jump on the High Line and stroll uptown.
Get My Boat - book a boat to ferry you around - why not?
Picnic in Central Park – hit E.A.T. on the Upper East Side for yummy provisions, and walk west to the best park in the world.
City Bikes - if you are comfy riding a bike in an urban area, this will get you where you want to go
Kayaking @Pier 26 - bring extra clothes for post kayaking activities
Visit Governors Island - it's a ferry ride to get there so you don't have be on the subway. Check the website for cultural happenings.
Circle Line Bear Mountain Cruise - Cruise up the Hudson River to Bear Mountain State Park and enjoy an on-board Oktoberfest!
Gear
Make daytripping seamless with the following gear:
Backpacks - hands free and water resistant is the way to be. North Face has a mini pack that will fit what you need.
Comfy Sneaks - you will hit between 10,000-20,000 steps so be good to your feet. These are super supportive and look like gummies . . .
Waterproof jacket with hood is a good starter piece - this jacket from RAINS is from ZOE in Princeton for $125
Essentials:
credit card
your vax card and ID
journal for remembering what you did
water bottle
and last, but not least - wipes - for your hands and handlebars
PS - Jane says does not receive any $$$ for mentioning products. I'm just passing along what I know to who I know for free because I love telling people what to do.
Cheers and bon voyage!
