New Jersey Audubon’s Plainsboro Preserve

 

Welcome to the New Jersey Audubon’s Family Nature Programs.  Each 60-90 minute program is designed to explore nature through a theme.  A portion of each program may be spent outdoors building a deeper connection to the natural world through fun and informative activities.  We provide a highly trained environmental educator for each of our programs.   Join us and create memories that will last a lifetime.  Educational and fun, these Family Nature Programs are perfect for beginning naturalists and their families ages 6 to adult.  Cost: members, $3 per person; nonmembers, $5 per person (unless otherwise noted).

SIGNS OF SPRING HIKE ON THE PLAINSBORO PRESERVE

Saturday, March 2nd

2:30 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

The Plainsboro Preserve is a great place to go for a spring hike.  Bring your hiking shoes, dress in layers and come prepared for a moderate hike to some of the lesser explored areas on the Preserve.  Expect to cover several miles at a moderate pace.

 

LITTLE TYKE NATURE HIKE

Saturday, March 9th

2:30 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Join our naturalist on a fun adventure into the natural world with your favorite budding naturalist.   We will explore the natural world together and share a story and hands on exploration.  Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult.  

 

SPRING EQUINOX CELEBRATION

Saturday, March 16th   

3:30 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Come and celebrate the Spring Equinox at the Plainsboro Preserve as we welcome in longer days.  We will celebrate with a snack before we head out onto the Preserve and hike to Maggie’s point; a favorite trail at the preserve.  Be prepared for an adventure and to celebrate the coming of spring!

 

Woodcock and amphibian evening walk  *Special Time*

Saturday, March 23rd 

Walk begins at 5:30 P.M.

Join us at the Plainsboro Preserve to witness the nuptial flights of the male woodcock as they try to woo their female counterparts. The Preserve has a number of these amazing and secretive birds and in years past we have seen and heard many of them.  Linger into the night as the amphibian chorus grows.  Join Sanctuary Director Sean Grace for this fun and informative evening walk.

 

TERRIFIC TURTLES

Saturday, March 30th    

3:30 P.M. - 5:00 P.M.

Did you know that the Plainsboro Preserve is home to many types of turtles?  Participants will meet several species of turtles in our nature center before hike out on the preserve and search for turtles emerging from their long winter nap. 

 

AMAZING ANIMALS OF OUR VERNAL POOLS

Saturday, April 6th  

3:30 P.M. – 5:00 P.M.

In spring, temporary ponds fill up, and these are magnets for breeding amphibians.  Vicki Schwartz will lead a walk to the vernal pools at Plainsboro Preserve, where you will learn what vernal pools are, why they are important, and what kind of animals can be found there.  Plan to get wet and muddy feet! 

 

PRIMITIVE TECHNOLOGY WEEKEND   *SPECIAL TIME*

Saturday, April 13th  

12:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M.

Come and learn about how traditional people from around the world lived before many of our modern conveniences.  There will be hands on demonstrations on wooden bows, making fire, making stone tools, clay pottery, baskets, and more.  This will be a celebration of the traditional skills that all of our ancestors used to survive and thrive with nature. 

$5 donation is encouraged. 

 

 

EARTH DAY FESTIVAL

Saturday, April 20th  

In celebration of Earth Day we are offering Family Nature Programs at 8:00am, 11:00am, & 3:30pm.  Please join us in support of Earth Day and your local nature center.  Standard program rates apply. 

 

SPRING BIRD MIGRATION AT THE PLAINSBORO PRESERVE

Saturday, April 20th   

8:00 A.M.  – 10:00 A.M.

Come and join Sanctuary Director Sean Grace for a stroll around the preserve looking and listening for a variety of birds.  We will start with some close observations at our feeders and then look for some early spring migrants.

GEOCACHING: A GPS SCAVENGER HUNT

Saturday, April 20th

3:30 P.M. - 5:00 P.M.

Welcome to the 21st century scavenger hunt!  Geocaching is a real-world outdoor treasure hunt where players try to locate hidden containers using latitude and longitude coordinates.  After an introduction to the world of geocaching, we’ll head outside with our GPS units to search for hidden treasure on the preserve!  Please bring a GPS-enabled smartphone or GPS unit if you have one.

 

 

FULL MOON HIKE  *SPECIAL TIME*

Friday, April 26th

6:30 P.M. – 8:30 P.M.

The full moon has brought people together throughout human history.  Join us and experience an adventure where owls hoot, foxes call, and spring frogs sing in a chorus.  Join us for this family friendly exploration into the animal world at night.

 

NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

Saturday, April 27th

3:30 P.M. – 4:30 P.M.

Come on in and participate in our photography contest.  Pictures must be taken in New Jersey and represent either wildlife or wild places. All photos must be properly labeled, accompanied by a caption, taken ethically, and not retouched with photo shop or similar programs.  See our website for full details.  Register early this contest will be limited.

 

 

NATURE FIELD TRIPS

New Jersey Audubon Society Plainsboro Preserve

 

Welcome to New Jersey Audubon’s Nature Field Trips that are designed for adults and focused family members to explore one of the natural areas of New Jersey.  We provide a highly trained environmental educator for each of our field trips.   Join us and build memories that will last a lifetime while exploring a deeper connection with the natural world.  All the trips involve moderate exercise and each participant should bring basic necessities such as water, sunscreen, snack and appropriate clothing.  We prefer ten-day pre-registration and advanced payment of $10 for NJAS members or $15 for nonmembers for all trips (unless otherwise noted).  To register, send check payable to “NJ Audubon” to Plainsboro Preserve, 80 Scotts Corner Road, Cranbury, NJ 08512 or call (609) 897-9400.  No refunds are made unless we cancel the trip. BARNEGAT LIGHT STATE PARK

Saturday March 2, 2013- 10 am to 3 pm

Join Scott Barnes for scoters, Harlequin Ducks, and eiders at this scenic birding destination.  We’ll hope for Harbor Seals, Snow Buntings, and perhaps a “good gull” such as Iceland, Glaucous, or Black-legged Kittiwake.

Location: Meet at Barnegat Light State Park, main parking lot.

Cost: $20 members/$25 non-members

 

BIRDING BY BIKE AT DUKE FARMS

March 2nd, 9:00 AM to 12:00PM

A unique adventure that combines watching birds and bicycling will be held at Duke Farms at 9 a.m. Several different habitats including forests, meadows and lake will be explored to learn about a variety of bird species. Participants are required to bring their own mountain bikes and protective head gear for the tour. This program welcomes ages twelve and up.

SOURLANDS SALAMANDER SEARCH

Friday, March 8th 7:00 – 9:00PM Or….

Friday, March 15th 7:00 – 9:00PM

Join us for an adventure into the Sourland Mountains as we search for the remarkable spotted salamander.  When the first warm rains of spring arrive, many amphibians emerge from their winter burrows and migrate to their breeding pools.  This is the only time of year that these large bodied salamanders can be seen above ground in large numbers.  Don’t miss this spectacular natural event!  Bring a headlamp or flashlight, dress warmly, and wear rubber boots.  This trip requires a short walk into the woods at night.

SALEM COUNTY BIRDING

Saturday April 6, 2013

9 am to 2 pm

Explore Mannington Marsh, Featherbed Lane, and other sites with Scott Barnes and Linda Mack for early spring waterfowl, herons, egrets, raptors, and songbirds.  Species we’ll seek out include Blue-winged Teal, Sandhill Crane, plenty of eagles, and perhaps a rarity like Ross’s Goose or Yellow-headed Blackbird if we’re lucky.

Location: Pedricktown Rd, Logan Twp, just east of the causeway (before the marsh).

Cost: $20 members/$25 non-members

 

MORGAN MUDFLATS/SOUTH AMBOY

Saturday April 13, 2013

8:30 am to 11:30 am

Search for the elusive Little Gull, other interesting gulls, waterfowl, and early spring migrants with Scott Barnes.  This is often the peak time of year for large numbers of Bonaparte’s Gulls, a spectacle in its own right.

Location: Meet at the cul-de-sac at the end of Cliff Ave in the Morgan section of Sayreville.

Cost: $15 members/$20 non-members

 

SPRING WARBLER IDENTIFICATION

Sunday, April 14

1:00 P.M.

This is a program offering an opportunity for you to sharpen your skills at identifying America’s most beautiful songsters in their finest breeding attire. The program will cover 35 species of eastern resident and migrant warblers.  Images will illustrate diagnostic field marks to help you separate members of this difficult group in the field.

Location:  Plainsboro Preserve

Cost: $20 members/$25 non-members
