Stockton, NJ (January 12, 2010) - The Arts (www.TheArtsStockton.com), a center for arts education located on Route 29 in Stockton, NJ has announced its winter through spring schedule of art classes for kids, adults and professionals. Featuring instructors who are well-known professionals from Hunterdon and Bucks counties, the classes are designed to help artists, students, and professionals learn about painting, drawing, ceramics, pottery, jewelry making, tile, mosaic, textiles and storytelling.
Children aged 5 – 7 are invited to sign up for “Everything Art”, which encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics and craft projects specially designed for young ones to explore their creativity. Running for 6 Wednesdays, Feb. 17-March 24 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m., Everything Art is taught by Doylestown, PA artist Denise Callanan-Kline. Denise earned her BS from Temple University and MA from Arcadia University. Tuition is $95.
Students aged 7 – 10 can express their creativity while developing their artistic skills in the class “Painting and Drawing”, which uses charcoal, pencil, pastel, acrylic and watercolors to introduce a wide range of possibilities, themes and techniques. Taught by Denise Callanan-Kline, the class runs on 6 Wednesdays
April 21 - May 26 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Tuition is $95.
In the “Arts Sampler” class, students ages 7-12 explore a variety of art making techniques and materials. Using drawing, painting, clay, wire, fabric and more, students will enjoy the opportunity experiment, learn and create a new project each week. The course is taught by Gabrielle Kanter, co-founder of The Arts and will be held 5 Mondays, April 19 - May 17 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Tuition is $85.
“Ceramics & Pottery” for ages 8-12 explores the many possibilities that clay has to offer. Students will build ceramic sculptures & pots using slabs, coils, the pottery wheel & techniques used to texture and glaze their clay creations. Session 1 will be held 4 Thursdays, Feb. 4 - 25 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Tuition for session 1 is $80. Session 2 will be held 6 Thursdays, April 22 - May 27 from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. The class is taught by Pt. Pleasant, PA ceramic and 3D artist Gloria Kosco. Gloria earned her BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Tuition for session 2 is $110.
A spring vacation art camp for students ages 7-12 will be held on April 1, 2, and April 5 thru 9 from 9 a.m. - noon. Offering a variety of creative fun during the holiday break with painting, drawing, sculpting and crafts, students can sign up per day or for all. Tuition is $25 per day.
Adults Classes
Adults can sign up for a variety of classes, including “Painted Canvas Floorclooths” with artist Gabrielle Kanter who earned her BFA from The University of the Arts and MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. The class teaches adults freehand, stenciled, stamped and masked painting techniques used to make functional, one of a kind floorcloths and placemats. It runs 6 Tuesdays starting on April 20 through May 25 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Tuition is $120, material fee is $40.
In the class “Jewelry: Intro to Precious Metal Clay”, participants will work with a smooth clay-like material that can be formed using the simplest of tools, which after firing yields a finished object of pure silver which can further be worked with basic jewelry techniques - this is precious metal clay (PMC). Participants will use PMC to make rings, beads, hollow formed pendants, to set stones and more. Instructor Chris Darway of Richboro, PA has been working in metals for almost 30 years as an educator & designer. He is a senior lecturer at The University of the Arts and earned his BFA at Philadelphia College of Art. The class will be held on 4 Tuesdays, Feb. 2 – Feb. 23. Tuition is $145. Materials & basic tool kit will be available for purchase from instructor at class.
The class “Jewelry: Precious Metal Clay Certification” teaches how to work this amazing clay-like material into beautiful pure silver jewelry. In this three day intensive workshop, participants will use PMC to make a series of seven projects using stamping, carving & moldmaking to create rings, beads, hollow formed pendants, set stones & more. Students who complete the program will be awarded a certificate, receive a one-year membership to the PMC Guild and are enrolled in the Rio Rewards program. Participants in the “Ceramics & Pottery” class will use the pottery wheel, coils, slabs, modeling & molds to create tiles, mosaics, sculpture & functional objects in clay. This class is designed to assist students in discovering and expressing their individual style of creativity. It will be held 6 Tuesdays from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. from April 20 – May 25. The class is taught by Gloria Kosco. Tuition is $180, material & firing fee is $40.
“Watercolor Painting” teaches the foundations, techniques & materials used in working with this expressive and spontaneous medium. Beginners will work from still lifes with an emphasis on color mixing and composition, intermediate & advanced students will receive guidance with independently chosen projects. The class is taught by Denise MacIntyre and meets 5 Wednesdays, April 28 -May 26 from 10:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Tuition is $155.
Pastel is a versatile medium that utilizes the best of aspects of both drawing & painting. Beginners in the “Drawing: Pastel Workshop” will learn basic techniques, & also some more advanced techniques for the more advanced student. We will also explore how to create harmony by using dark and light shapes, making the most of values, using compliments & creating beautiful layered color. The class is taught by Denise MacIntyre and it meets on Sat., Apr. 24 & Sun., Apr. 25 from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Tuition & Material Fee is $125.

The Professional Institute for Educators from The University of the Arts (PIE) enhances the teaching skills of K-12 educators by providing non-matriculated graduate-level credit courses for professional development, PA Act 48 and personal enrichment. Courses are designed for all inclusive weekend sessions at multiple locations to serve the needs of educators.

Painted and Printed Textiles ED 7685C 01
This course is an introduction and overview to a broad range of traditional and experimental fabric design techniques to create pattern, design and images for use with students of all ages. Techniques may include batik, vat dying, direct application painting with thickened dyes and a variety of printing techniques. The course reviews materials, preparation and finishing to introduce you to these processes. Discussions consider how to develop these techniques into collaborative student projects for various ages relating to other subject areas. Concepts in the course can be adapted for application into large-scale student group wall hangings or painted floor cloths. Course content applicable to K-12 art teachers as well as any teacher interested in direct, hands-on approaches and craft-based methods of reaching a range of students, including students with special needs. Ceramic Tile and Mosaics, lev 1 ED 6020AC 01
Create large and small-scale ceramic mosaic constructions through the use of line drawings, freehand sketches, slide transfers or with computer assistance. Learn techniques such as plaster mold castings for tile replication opportunities, the use of plastic patterns or one-of-a-kind fabrications. Mounting and hanging are covered as well. Storytelling across the Curriculum ED 5707C 01
This course explores classroom applications of creative storytelling and the dramatic use of this art form to enhance a range of subjects across the curriculum. Looking at plot, narrative, structure and character, participants discover the oral and written traditions of storytelling, mythology, folklore and drama through activities and engaging exercises designed for classroom use. Multicultural tales and other examples consider integration into social science, language arts, visual arts, movement, math, science and music. Jewelry--Advanced Metal Clay ED 6051C 01
Further expand your techniques and skills with Precious Metal Clay (PMC). In this course, work with various forms of PMC to produce more advanced jewelry objects and construction, including topics such as wet and dry fabrication, use of the PMC kiln, alternative firing methods.
