Sarah Schulte Awarded $15,000 Community Service Scholarship
Princeton, NJ – Stuart senior Sarah Schulte was awarded the Pay It Forward Scholarship. The $15,000 award, sponsored by CURE Auto Insurance and WPST-FM, is given to a young adult who has performed unselfish acts, compassionate works or community action. Schulte, a Hopewell resident, was among five finalists and received her award at a dinner held February 18th.
Schulte, who has served as president of the sophomore and junior class, and currently president of Stuart’s Upper School Student Council, impressed the scholarship committee with her passion for and commitment to community service. Interested in pursuing a career in medicine, Schulte traveled to Guatemala in 2008 where she translated for doctors and nurses and volunteered at a pharmacy. Her experience there led her to certify as an EMT and she now serves with the Hopewell Borough EMT Squad as well as the Princeton First Aid Squad. She has led many community service efforts at Stuart including raising funds for the Red Cross, the Dos Huevos Program, (see KnowledgewithoutBorders.com), and a special program to provide the means for a school in Uganda to construct a potable water system. In addition, Schulte has renovated a home as part of a service project in Appalachia.
Recipients of the Pay It Forward Scholarship have three significant attributes: a passion for community service, an intellect that will allow them to further their service work, and leadership skills that spark a passion for service among their peers. The scholarship award may be used at the school of the recipient’s choice.
“We are so proud of Sarah,” said Frances de la Chapelle, Headmistress. “She embodies the Sacred Heart mission to community service that is a hallmark of this school. We wish her well in her college studies.”
Community service at Stuart models the Sacred Heart commitment to a “social awareness that impels to action.” The program helps students learn about the needs of the community and how to respond effectively with their unique gifts. The concept of service is ingrained into the culture of the school, and at all ages, students serve others inside and outside the school community.
Upper School students fulfill 50 hours of community service per year— with many, like Schulte, exceeding the requirement. Middle School students focus their service efforts on caring for the elderly and young children, and can often be found reading to the Pre-School students. Lower School students participate monthly in a special community-service project to benefit a local agency. They also work with students in the Stuart Pre-School, assisting them with classroom activities.
