Capitol Debate Summer Camps teach the fundamentals of public speaking and argumentation, enabling kids to develop core presentation and debating skills that boost confidence and self-esteem. Our debate camps teach students to structure arguments, prepare debate cases, research evidence, write rebuttal briefs, deliver speeches and refute opponent arguments. Capitol Debate's goal is to enrich the social, intellectual, and academic lives of our students through the art of communication. Since 2006, our academic camps have grown to serve thousands of students and are now hosted across the United States on over 15 campuses.

Wednesday, March 1 @ 9:30 AM - Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children of Mercer & Burlington Counties is currently seeking new volunteers! CASA is a non-profit organization that recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers who speak up in Mercer County Family Court for the best interests of children that have been removed from their families due to abuse and/or neglect and placed in the foster care system. Our volunteers strive to ensure the emotional, physical and educational well-being of these children. HomeFront’s Sixth Annual “Week of Hope” February 13th - 19th - offering a week of meaningful service opportunities, art, discussion, and educational forums to raise awareness about their work helping local families break the cycle of poverty. The Lawrence-based HomeFront, founded in 1991, has always depended on volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life. Last year, HomeFront relied on over 3,600 volunteers to support their more than 35 life changing programs and services. The Practical Gardener – Vegetable Garden Basics – An 8-Part Series with Anne Macaulay - Join Anne Macaulay, Ph.D., a self-described "practical gardener" as she teaches the basics of vegetable gardening through this 8-part series. The program will be held once a month from February through September. (Yes, February is a great time to start planning the garden!) Register HERE

Princeton Public Library Offering Sensory Storytime - Sensory Storytime is for all children ages 2 and up, but especially welcoming to those who are differently abled, on the autism spectrum, have sensory processing issues, or feel overwhelmed by noises or crowds. Children are encouraged to bring a favorite lovey, toy, or fidget. Registration required. This program will occur the second Monday of each month January through May. Registration will open one week prior to each program date. Program dates are: Feb. 13, March 13, April 10 and May 8. Registration is limited to 12 families. Just one registration per family is necessary.

City Kidz World magazine is accepting submissions from students grades 1st - 12th: poetry, short stories, essays, and artwork for the spring/summer issue. The final deadline is March 30. 2/5 - "Removing Barriers to Civic Engagement for African Americans,” by Dr. Princess Hoagland, immediate past president of the Trent House Association and recipient of a doctorate from Stockton University, on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at 2 pm via Zoom at tinyurl.com/TalkFeb5. This is a free program. Taking part in community decision-making through voting and other political activities is an important responsibility and privilege of American citizens. But some are denied this opportunity for civic engagement, have been discouraged from exercising their rights, or are alienated from political life as a force for positive change. Dr. Hoagland offers examples from the in-depth interviews she conducted with African American residents of Trenton of the barriers to their engagement in civic and political life.

2/6 – Continuing Conversations on Race, Princeton Public Library, 7pm., Virtual - Doctoral candidate Kristal C. Langford, lecturer of Black studies and psychology at William Paterson University, discusses the Lost Souls Public Memorial Project. Please register for Zoom link. The presentation highlights the resilience and resistance demonstrated by freed and enslaved Blacks who were sold to the Deep South out of New Jersey in 1818. The presentation also sheds light on the Middlesex County Judge Jacob Van Wickle's participation in the domestic slave trade. Register

2/11 – “Generational Wealth Summit” Kelsey Theatre - MCCC's West Windsor Campus, 9-12pm., This is a full-day event with a variety of home-buyer and financial-literacy workshops. 2/11 - Old Fashioned Valentine’s Day, Howell Living History Farm, 10-4pm., Children's Craft: Valentine's Day Card. The air may be chilly, but the farm's wintery landscape is the perfect setting for a heartwarming Valentine's Day ride. Couples can take a romantic spin in a two-seater sleigh or carriage pulled by a team of light workhorses. Families can ride in a bobsled or hay wagon pulled by a handsome team of drafts. 2/11 - “For the Love of It” - Jazz Vocal Collective featuring Camille Thurman, 8pm.,. This exciting event kicks off a new partnership between McCarter and Jazz at Princeton University (led by the award winning, incomparable alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa.) 2/17 – Concert, The Princeton Folk Music Society, 8pm.,Moira Smiley, live and live-streamed! A horizon-broadening evening with multi-talented singer and composer Moira Smiley. It has been said that Moira's mother tongue is traditional folk, but she draws on many different folk traditions, Appalachian, Celtic, early music, eastern European, shape-note singing, classical song, and jazz.
