Talk of the Sourlands: Ghosts of the Taiga: Secret Lives of Migratory Owls

Thursday October 30, 2025
7:00 PM

Presented by Tyler Christensen, Research Coordinator for Wild Bird Research Group

Owls are among the most cryptic and understudied birds worldwide. Many owls found in our area are seasonal visitors from the far north, quietly passing through or overwintering in our landscapes. Despite widespread fascination with owls, we still know surprisingly little about their movements and ecological needs. This talk will explore new local research that is uncovering the long-distance migrations and conservation needs of these elusive nocturnal predators. Presenter, Tyler Christensen, is an ecologist specializing in the study and conservation of elusive wildlife. As Research Coordinator for the nonprofit Wild Bird Research Group, he leads research on bird migration and habitat use, with a focus on owls. He is also a PhD candidate in Ecology & Evolution at Rutgers University investigating how human-altered landscapes affect the spatial ecology and conservation of cryptic snakes.
