Why did the Continental Army encamp its main force at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-1778? What was the physical impact of the encampment? How did the location of the encampment benefit the patriot cause militarily as well as in matters of foreign policy? Historian Kenneth Gavin will explore these questions to reveal a complex set of social, political, economic, and strategic factors that determined Valley Forge to the only viable option for the army’s 1777 encampment.
