SAN ANTONIO, TX (February XX, 2014) – Effective January 27, 2014, The American Volkssport Association (AVA) National Executive Council XVIII welcomed Stephanie Sánchez Sinclair to the position of National Executive Director. Valuing her experience in community relations, communications and fund development for major nonprofits and corporations, AVA views Sinclair’s new role as an opportunity to promote their mission of fun, fitness and friendship across the country. As the official representative of volkssporting in the United States, AVA administers one of the largest healthy living sports programs from its headquarters in Universal City, Texas. AVA has a nationwide grassroots network of more than 250 clubs and is a member of the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV) founded in Germany. Now in 28 countries worldwide, volkssporting is a noncompetitive, self-paced activity consisting of walks and hikes, bike rides, swims, skating, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. While fitness is a major component, equal emphasis is also placed on providing a safe, stress-free environment where everyone can have fun among a network of likeminded individuals. “The primary mission of volkssporting is to encourage physical fitness, fun and friendship for people of all ages and capabilities,” said Dennis Michele, President of AVA National Executive Council. “We’re elated to have Ms. Sinclair join the American Volkssport Association in these efforts, as her talent in community relations is invaluable in promoting our goal of overall good health.” In planning its volkssporting activities and events, AVA incorporates as much diversity and flexibility as possible to ensure everyone has an opportunity to participate. Translated from German, volkssporting means “sport of the people,” which is strongly reflected in its versatile and family-oriented nature. There are no limitations on age or physical ability, as trails are rated based on the challenge they present, and events take place year round in various locations and climates. With activities such as urban walks for individuals who prefer metro areas, or scenic hikes for the more outdoorsy type, AVA truly succeeds in making volkssporting accessible to everyone. “I have wonderful memories of volkssporting adventures with my mother and grandmother, as we frequently participated in events during the late 1990’s,” said Sinclair. “It is a privilege to be selected to work with the National Executive Council and AVA national headquarters staff, as they share the same degree of passion for promoting positive, healthy lifestyles across the country.” With more than a decade of skill in managing complex community relations and fund development, Sinclair holds a Master of Science in Nonprofit Management from Our Lady of the Lake University, along with a Master of Arts in Communication Studies and a bachelor’s degree in English-Communication Arts from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. Sinclair is a graduate of Leadership San Antonio, Class XXXV, and was selected as the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas 2012 Best of the Best staff excellence recipient. She currently resides in San Antonio, Texas with her husband and daughter.
