Johnson & Johnson World Headquarters Gallery hosts Ribbon of Life: Delaware & Raritan Canal at 175.

New Brunswick, N.J. December, 2009—The Johnson & Johnson World Headquarters Gallery is proud to host Ribbon of Life: Delaware & Raritan Canal at 175, presented by the D&R Greenway Land Trust. The exhibition will be open until January 18, 2010.

The exhibition celebrates the 175th Anniversary of the Delaware and Raritan Canal and includes images selected from the archives of the D&R Canal Commission. These images were collected by Jim Amon, the former executive director of the D&R Canal Commission, and many of them were shown for the first time at the Johnson Education Center of the D&R Greenway in Princeton, N.J. earlier this year when the travelling show began.

The exhibit traces the history of the canal through postcards and vintage photographs. It includes a selection of oversized, hand-colored postcards dated between 1871 and 1924 depicting the towns and places of interest along the water. They feature the canal as an integral part of the area transport and trade. Also, included with the images are firsthand accounts of the canal from travelers written in an 1887 issue of Century Magazine. The photographs also portray various maritime vehicles which used the Canal for transportation. Of particular distinction are the “powered steam crafts,” which the D&R Canal allowed on its main-stem early on.

D&R Greenway Land Trust is central New Jersey's non-profit land preservation organization, founded in 1989. Their mission is threefold: to preserve and protect a permanent network of natural lands and open spaces, to provide the public with appropriate access to these areas, and to promote policies, educational programs, and partnerships that result in a public commitment to land preservation.

“Johnson & Johnson is pleased to host Ribbon of Life,” said Michael Bzdak, Director, Corporate Contributions, Johnson & Johnson.  “Since Johnson & Johnson is a very integrated part of our local community’s history, we believe it is important to present these fascinating images in our galleries.”

The Johnson & Johnson World Headquarters Gallery is located at One Johnson & Johnson Plaza, New Brunswick, N.J. The gallery is open by appointment only. For more information about fine art exhibitions or to schedule a visit to the gallery, call 732-524-6957.
