PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

Dear Sisters,

Well, my friends, I don't know about you, but it seems another summer has just slipped by way too fast.  I trust everyone had a great time and enjoyed the warm weather to the fullest, with family and friends.

It's now time to focus our attention on the luncheon planned for Sept. 14 at Cranbury Inn, Cranbury, NJ.  We will be recognizing a father and daughter, Walter and Niambi Daniels, for their honorable service to our community and beyond.  We especially want to thank them for their support of our scholarship program by donating one of the two awards given to Hightstown High graduating seniors  for the past 6 years.

  

Please remind your family and friends to send in their reservations for the luncheon - it's not too late.  I am looking forward to a successful event.

Suggestions are needed for topics and guest speakers for our upcoming year  We will be working on this matter at our next meeting.  So, put on your thinking caps.

Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day!

Steering Committee Corner --
This Committee is made up of the officers of the Network. We meet at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the Twin Rivers Library, 276 Abbington Dr., E. Windsor, NJ., (609-443-1880). Any member can attend these meetings, if so desired.

 

The Book Club - "Reading Between the Lines."

The next book is "The Bond" by the 3 African American Doctors who grew up in Newark, NJ.   The date of our discussion will be announced at a later date and will be held at Joyce's.  If you plan to attend let Joyce know (609) 448-4511.

NEXT LEVEL YOUTH, a Hightstown/East Windsor based community youth organization needs your support.  They have started a tutoring/mentoring program to support the children of  Hightstown /East Windsor.  They meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Grace Norton Rogers School (Multi-purpose room) in Hightstown.  They are currently working with children in grades 3-8.  Their focus is homework completion, and general skill building.  They bring in guest speakers and are planning a few field trips.

STROKE WARNING SIGNS:  (This can occur regardless of age)

Stroke is a medical emergency.  Every second counts, because time lost is brain lost!  Know these stroke warning signs and teach them to others:

* Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body.

*Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.

*Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

*Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.

*Sudden, severe headache with no known cause.

If you or someone with you has one or more of these signs, don't delay.  Immediately call 9-1-1 or the emergency medical services (EMS) number so an ambulance - ideally with advanced life support - can be sent for you.  Also, check the time so you'll know when the first symptoms appeared.  It's very important to take immediate action.  If given within three hours of the start of symptoms, a clot-busting drug can reduce long term disability for the most common type of stroke.  (American Heart Assn. & American Stroke Assn.)

TIPS for September, 2008

 

Goodbye Fruit Flies: To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2 with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well.  You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever.

 

Foggy Windshield - Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car.  When the windows fog, rub with the eraser!  Works better than a cloth!

Joyce is recovering from knee surgery and should be up and around soon.
