PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

Dear Sisters

HAPPY NEW YEAR - 2009

 Now that the Christmas Holiday is over and the New Year is here, I hope everyone had a great and memorable time with family and friends.  It is now time to make your New Year's resolutions - only, don't make them so elaborate you can't keep them.  We all know what happens by February when we fail to keep promises to ourselves.  So, relax and keep your list of resolutions very short, thereby, making it easier to comply and feel good about yourself.

Try to make some "me" time each week. This will make you better prepared to take care of yourself and those who are close to you.

  

I would like to welcome a new member, Jenine, who recently joined us.  I hope everyone gets a chance to meet and greet Jenine at our Jan. 13 meeting. 

A big "Thank You" to all the ladies who attended the "Tea" on Dec. 6th at "The Cookie Cottage".  Based on some reports, it appeared everyone had a lovely time with good food and conversation in a relaxed atmosphere.

Again, Happy New Year to all.

IMPORTANT CJNBW DATES

Tuesday, Jan. 6  - 7:30 p.m.  Steering Comm. Meeting at Twin Rivers Library,

Abbington Dr., E. Windsor

 

Tuesday, Jan. 13 - 7:30 p.m. - Regular Monthly Meeting at Hickory Corner Road Library, Hickory Corner Rd., East Windsor 609-443-1330.  This will be a business meeting.  Visitors are welcome.

-- This meeting will also facilitate a FOOD

 

COLLECTION of canned or other non-perishable goods for donation to the Crisis Ministry.  They are in dire need of food for those less fortunate as their pantry shelves are almost empty.  The present economic situation means more people are in need of help.  Please consider bringing any of the above mentioned food to this meeting if you wish to help (no glass containers). Thank you.

 

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Saturday, Jan 10 - 5 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.  - Fundraiser to benefit the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans to be held at "The Bistro Soleil," (across from the Hightstown Post Office).  Ticket price (Minimum donation $30 per person) includes Beverages, Food, Live Music,(by Karen Updike, accompanied by Heather Teffenhart on Violin), and a preview of a documentary regarding the 9th Ward by "Desire Street Ministries and FargoFilms".  To purchase tickets contact Maggie at

Wine and Beer will not be served until 7 p.m.

 

Tuesday, Jan. 20 - 11:15 a.m. NJPAC, Newark - Live Broadcast of Inauguration of 44th President of the USA - Barack Obama.  Pick up FREE tickets beginning 12/15 at the Box Office (limit 4 tickets per person).  Box Office will offer extended hours on Mondays from 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. to accommodate demand for this special event.  Attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods to help the Community Food Bank of NJ.

Steering Committee Corner --
This Committee is made up of the officers of the Network. We meet at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the Twin Rivers Library, 276 Abbington Dr., E. Windsor, NJ., 609-443-1880. Any member can attend these meetings, if so desired.

 

The Book Club - "Reading Between the Lines."

The next book is "The Bond" by 3 doctors from Newark, namely: Dr. Sampson Davis, Dr.George Jenkins and Dr. Rameck Hunt.   The date of our discussion will be announced next month. We had scheduled this book several months ago, but had a difficult time finding it.  The Mercer County Libraries didn't have it, but may now have it.

NEXT LEVEL YOUTH, a Hightstown/East Windsor based community youth organization is always in need of tutors/mentors.  This program supports the children of  Hightstown East Windsor, and  meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Grace Norton Rogers School (Multi-purpose room) in Hightstown.  They are currently working with children in grades 3-8.  Their focus is homework completion, and general skill building.  They bring in guest speakers and are planning a few field trips.

2010 U.S. CENSUS - If you are interested in temporary work, you may want to contact the U.S. Census Bureau, as they are in the process (I understand) of hiring a large number of census takers.  The website you should contact is: www.census.gov/2010censusjob/index.phb or www.WUSA9.com.

There will most likely be ads in local newspapers, so be on the look-out.

TIPS for January, 2009

Freezer-failure emergencies

To be sure that your refrigerator or freezer hasn't defrosted and refrozen while you're on vacation, put a few ice cubes in a plastic bag in the freezer before you leave.  On your return, if you find the ice in any other shape but cubes, you'll know you've got problems.

Tomatoes - Freeze leftovers for use in soups and stews.  They'll be mushy, but that won't affect the taste.
