Next Trenton Walks! Target South Broad Streetscape Improvements, Capital City Treasures and Efforts to Improve Assunpink Creek's Water Quality

Trenton N.J. – The next three events of Trenton Walks! - one each in January, February and March - will first celebrate the history of Trenton, then tantalize participants with an amazing new vision and plan for South Broad Street, and finally will enlighten walkers about efforts to protect the Assunpink Creek waters and surrounding neighborhoods.

Tomorrow, January 21, at noon, Trenton Walks! leaders Jacque Howard, co-chair of the Trenton Green Team, and Tim Brill of the N.J. Conservation Foundation, will explore the unique mix of history, businesses, government facilities, performance venues and open spaces that make Trenton great.  Attendees on this 1.2-mile walk will leave from and return to HUB-13,13 West Front Street, and travel past the Old Barracks, the Masonic Temple and the War Memorial through Mill Hill Park to the Passage Theatre and the Douglass House. This shorter, 1.2-mile walk is designed to fit a 30- to 45-minute lunch break.

On Sunday, February 8, at 1 p.m., Mercer County Executive Dan Benson will share exciting plans to create a welcoming and connected streetscape in the South Broad Street area that brings people together, supports local businesses and capitalizes on civic and cultural spaces. His revitalization plans will also improve the pedestrian and cycling experience. Planned stops on the 2.1-mile walk include the Eagle Tavern, Clinton & Roebling Lofts, Millyard Park and Casa Cultura.

Attendees will meet at the main entrance of the Mercer County Administration Building, 640 S. Broad Street. Plenty of free parking is available in the county lot off South Broad Street for those who drive to the event. The meeting place is also accessible by public transit.

March's 1.2 mile walk, which will take place on Friday, March 13, at 4:30 p.m., will offer an environmental focus on the Assunpink Creek as it winds through East Trenton before joining the Delaware River. Walkers should meet at Artworks, at 19 Everett Alley, off South Stockton Street. The route will follow the Assunpink through Mill Hill Park to Clay Street Park and back.

Watershed Institute scientists will talk about how healthy the waterway is and how they are working with community members in 11 communities, including Lawrence and West Windsor, to develop and implement a plan to improve water quality and reduce flooding. This walk will also serve as a chance for working group partners, students, and community members to connect around shared goals for cleaner, more resilient waterways.
