Beyond Decoding: How Background Knowledge Drives Reading Comprehension, The Lewis School

Wednesday March 11, 2026
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Presented by: Samantha Townsend, M.S. CCC-SLP, C-SLDI Speech-Language Pathologist

Strong reading comprehension depends on far more than decoding skills alone—it is deeply rooted in students’ background knowledge, vocabulary, and exposure to rich content across subjects. We will explore how building background knowledge and providing intentional content instruction significantly enhance students’ ability to understand, retain, and engage with what they read. Attendees will learn how knowledge supports vocabulary growth, strengthens language comprehension, and reduces cognitive load for students with dyslexia, allowing them to focus more fully on meaning. Through research-based insights and practical examples, this session will highlight why systematic exposure to varied topics and explicit teaching of concepts are essential for improving reading comprehension outcomes in struggling readers.

For admission to this presentation, registration is required by Friday, March 6, 2026. To register, please use the following link HERE
