Microforest Planting at Quarry Park

Saturday October 4, 2025
10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

On Saturday October 4th (rain date October 5th), the Municipality in collaboration with the Environmental Commission, Shade Tree Commission, and Sustainable Princeton, will host a planting event for Princeton’s first microforest!

Based on the Miyawaki method, approximately 1,500 trees and shrubs will be planted in an underutilized 6,000 square foot grassy area of Quarry Park. The high density creates increased competition for light and nutrients and will result in accelerated tree growth: Miyawaki forests typically mature in 20 to 30 years instead of 100+ years. The planting will be organized in shifts – sign up here. There may be spare planting slots available on the day, but signing up in advance is strongly encouraged. Any resident who would like to learn more about this project is very welcome to attend the event at any time and chat with the organizers.

There is also an opportunity to support the microforest project by making a donation to the Shade Tree Trust Reserve - donations may be made in memory of or to honor a special person or event, and, at the discretion of the donor, will be publicly recognized on the microforest project website. See the donation form for more details.
