Lewis B. Cuyler Lecture: The Delaware & Raritan Canal, Historical Society of Princeton

Tuesday April 30, 2024
6:30 PM

Opening in 1834, the Delaware and Raritan Canal provided an efficient and reliable way to transport freight, mainly anthracite coal, between Philadelphia and New York City markets and towns along the way. As railroads grew in prominence, canal usage declined and, after 98 years, the route closed. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of D&R State Park, a 70-mile recreation path along the canal. Author and historian Linda J. Barth will share the history of one of America’s most successful towpath canals, highlighting the people, bridges, locks, and aqueducts that made it work.
