Kathleen Hurley Liao is known for her innovative approach to mixed-media abstract art. An alumna of Barnard College, Columbia University (B.A. Anthropology), she began a transformative journey back to visual artistry in 2007. Liao's work is rooted in spontaneity and energy. Each piece begins with automatic, unplanned marks—an instinctive starting point that allows the unexpected to emerge. Liao works in mixed media, combining materials like charcoal, graphite, acrylics, and oils to create visual abstracts that often take on a life of their own.
Notably she was honored with a commission by the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic to create work for their performance of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" in 2023.
Liao was selected for a four-week Art Residency at Chateau d'Orquevaux in France, and recently completed a three month residency in Busan, South Korea organized by the Liquid Arts Network, Naughty Muse Studios, and Arise Artspace. She is also a recipient of the Outstanding West Windsor Artist award from the West Windsor Arts Council, and two Best in Printmaking awards from the Trenton City Museum. Liao maintains a studio in HIghtstown, NJ.
TAWA is a Greater Trenton nonprofit organization and has a 40-year history organizing exhibits in such venues as the New Jersey State Museum, Trenton City Museum, Artworks Trenton, Prince Street Gallery in New York City, and more.
