River Phoenix gives a sensitive, captivating performance as a narcoleptic street hustler in search of his absent mother. His best friend, played by Keanu Reeves, shares the same line of work, but has a more prosperous road laid out for his future. Together, the two navigate the tumultuous streets of the Pacific Northwest. Influenced by Shakespeare’s “Henriad,” MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO is a haunting and visually stunning tale from director Gus Van Sant that captures a queer romance on the margins of society. Rated R.
