Literacy New Jersey Mercer Programs Tutor Training Workshop - Give the gift of literacy! Join us as a volunteer tutor and help adults improve their English literacy skills. Work one-to-one or in small groups to teach adults who are learning to speak, read, and write English. Our Tutor Training Workshop will take place online on Zoom, Wednesdays, January 25, February 1, 8, 15, 22, and March 1 from 6:30-8:30pm. Participants are expected to attend all training sessions and complete some independent online assignments. Previous teaching experience not necessary. Our training will provide you with all the essential skills and support to become an effective tutor. Princeton Partners with Recycle Coach
The Municipality has partnered with Recycle Coach, an address-based app that can be downloaded from the iTunes or GooglePlay app store. The app offers information about Princeton’s recycling program that is serviced by Mercer County Improvement Authority. You can access your recycling, trash, and leaf and brush schedules, and set alerts and reminders so you never miss your collection days. The communication feature lets you submit questions or issues instantly to our office for a timely reply. No smartphone? No problem! Enjoy the desktop-friendly version. Visit the Recycling in Princeton webpage and type in your address to get started.

YWCA Princeton has launched its newest economic empowerment pilot: LEAP – Learn Empower Advance Programs. The first piece of the pilot, known as Strive offers free digital literacy skills training and professional development.
The next Strive cohort will feature a 10-week course meeting once a week for 3 hours at YWCA Princeton starting in January 2023. Visit ywcaprinceton.org to learn more about Strive.

Friends of the Lawrence Library January Book Sale
Shop the Friends of the Lawrence Library January Book Sale for thousands of used, gently-read books for readers of all ages. The sale opens to the general public on Friday, January 27, 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm and ends Monday, January 30 at 4:30 pm at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library System, 2751 Brunswick Pike, Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Cash or checks only. 
The book sale's Early Admission on Friday, January 27, 10:00-12:00 pm, is an ideal opportunity to be the first to enjoy some amazing deals. Early admission is free for current members of the Friends of the Lawrence Library. New memberships can be purchased during the Early Admission event. Entry to the Early Admission event is $5 for the general public.

2023 Princeton Environmental Film Festival
PEFF is scheduled for March 24-31, 2023. Films will be presented in public screenings and also available to stream online, on demand. Junior Historian’s Club @ Wicoff House January – March
Winter season registration is now open for Junior Historian’s Club at the Wicoff House! The Junior Historians Club meets weekly, on Saturdays from 2 – 4 pm. Kids learn about historic preservation through fun and immersive activities. Each member receives a JHC notebook and t-shirt. Ages 6-10. The upcoming program of 10 meetings begins on Jan 14th and ends March 18th. Each meeting will have a theme — such as archaeology, architecture, genealogy, cultural heritage and oral history –and will include activities and crafts. 1/5 - Great Minds Salon: Regenerative Growing in the Garden State, 8:15pm - Sponsored by The Jewish Center Princeton. Gabriel Notterman Siciliano will be discussing regenerative growing in the Garden State, along with sharing a short history of local Jewish farming in Mercer County. 1/6 – Opening Art Reception, Small World Coffee, 5-7pm., The artists of Princeton Makes, the Princeton-based artist cooperative, will host an exhibition of their work at Small World Coffee from January 4 through February 7. An opening reception will be held on January 6 at Small World Coffee on Witherspoon St. from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The reception will feature live music by Zeke Levine, and an opportunity to meet the artists showing their work in the exhibition. All works will be available for purchase.

1/6 - Fiesta Del Día De Los Reyes Magos Flamenco Celebration, ACP, 7-8pm., Join the Arts Council of Princeton for a special dance performance! Fiesta del Día de Los Reyes Magos, or Three Kings Day, is celebrated throughout the world to mark the culmination of the twelve days of Christmas. This live dance performance by the Arts Council's Flamenco program, led by Lisa Botalico, will feature multiple dance numbers as you learn about this cultural holiday and end the holiday season in celebration! Tickets are $10. 1/15 - Trailblazers – Music for the Soul, 3pm., 1867 Sanctuary - features world renowned string players Lenuta and George Atanasiu and pianist Clipper Erickson in a program of pioneering works by composers of past and present on Martin Luther King weekend, January 15 at 3:00 PM EST. As part of the Music for the Soul series, we combine Nathaniel Dett’s seminal work of African-American music, In the Bottoms, with leading contemporary Ukrainian Bohdana Frolyak’s intensely moving remembrance of the 1932-33 famine, Lamento, and Beethoven’s first trio, Op. 1, No. 1. Plus a world premiere by Italian Alberto Caprioli for violin and piano, La petite phrase retrouvée, commemorating French writer Marcel Proust. 1/16 – MLK Day at ACP, 9-11am - Join the Arts Council of Princeton as we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We will begin the morning with remarks from our 2023 featured speaker, Tina Campt – noted Black feminist theorist of visual culture and contemporary art and Roger S. Berlind ’52 Professor in the Humanities at Princeton University – during a community bagel and coffee breakfast. Families are invited to pick up a copy of an updated limited-edition coloring book featuring prominent Black residents of Princeton from history. Help us help those in need: bring canned or boxed non-perishables for our food drive. 1/22 – Virtual Docent Tour of the Yale Center for British Art, 3pm., Join a docent-led tour of the Yale Center for British Art from the comfort of home. Founded by Paul Mellon (Yale College, Class of 1929), the Yale Center for British Art is the largest museum outside of the United Kingdom devoted to the art of Great Britain. 1/25 – Winter Seedling Workshop, Morven, 12pm., Beat the winter doldrums and prepare for spring by growing seedlings indoors for your home garden. Morven’s horticulturalists Louise Senior and Charlie Thomforde will walk participants through the science and practice behind growing seedlings indoors for spring planting. 1/29 – Wassailing the Apple Trees, Terhune Orchards, 1-4pm., Raise a glass of hot cider with us as Terhune Orchards honors the trees that give us our wonderful apples. The ancient British tradition of wassailing the apple trees to protect them from harm is a popular winter celebration at Terhune Orchards that you won’t want to miss! Activities include singing, dancing and playing of primitive instruments, toasts of hot cider and placing gifts of cider-soaked bread in the tree branches while chanting the lively words of praise and New Year. 2/1 - Wednesday Night Out: Lichens of the Hopewell Valley with Dennis Waters, 7-8pm, The Hopewell Theater, 5 South Greenwood Avenue, Hopewell.
Lichens are everywhere, growing on trees, rocks, tombstones, and rotting logs. More than 100 species of lichen are found in the Hopewell Valley and Sourland Region, including a species new to science that was discovered on Mt. Rose. Join us to learn about these fascinating and ecologically important organisms, where they live and how they live. Bring lichens you have found and learn to identify the common ones.
