President's Message
Dear Members:

On October 13, CJNBW held its annual Open House at the Hickory Comer Library.  The highlight of the evening was the presentation of scholarships to 6 women who are  returning to college for the 2002 school year.

Professor Kazitha Ramsamy of Rutgers University congratulated the winners and praised them for their accomplishments.  We were all impressed by the recipients' dedication and resiliency in earning their undergraduate degrees and in committing to start a Masters program thereafter.  Members of CJNBW salute these women and hope to see them as future members of the network!  They have truly been an inspiration to all of us.  Keep up the good work, ladies!

Below are the 6 recipients' names and the colleges that they are attending:

Ms. Barbara Mitchell
Ms. Jacqueline Jackson
Ms. Antoinette Emanuel

Special thanks go out to the CJNBW Scholarship Committee of Ms. Noreen Lois Duncan and Ms. Regina Quince. We appreciate the time they spent and the research they did in selecting such deserving women.

Dr. Cecelia B. Hodges entertained the attendees at the Open House. As always, her stories and poetry were dramatic, funny and very entertaining. Thank you Cecelia for coming back to give us more "food" for thought!

Thanks also to the members of the Steering Committee, who selected and provided refreshments and door prizes for the event. The evening was a great success

I look forward to seeing you all at the next regular monthly meeting that will be held on Nov. 12, at the Hickory Corner Library.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving with your families and friends!

Sincerely,

Ruth Rainford Timins

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

Thank You, Thank you

Noreen Lois Duncan and Regina Quince did a splendid job in recruiting candidates for scholarships.  We can't thank them enough for a job well done.  A lot of time and effort went into making the choices, and we truly appreciate their dedication.

Unfortunately, the other member of their team, Beverly Hobbs, resigned from CJNBW due to an increase in her job responsibilities.  We do hope Beverly still keeps in touch and we will miss her.

CLOTHING COLLECTION

We will be collecting clothing (in good condition and clean) for the Urban Women's Center and Dress for Success, both located in Trenton.  These organizations assist women who are returning to work and do not have the proper attire for work.  They also need shoes and handbags.  Joyce will take donations for "Dress for Success" and Noreen for the "Urban Woman's Center."  Thank you for your help in this matter.  Your donations will be greatly appreciated.

OPEN HOUSE

The Open House on Oct. 13 at the Hickory Corner Rd. Library was well attended (31 persons) and was a success.  We were entertained by Dr. Cecelia B. Hodges, who did another fantastic job.  As stated in the President's message, six (6) scholarships were awarded.  See the President's message for the names and colleges of the awardees. It was very rewarding to the members of CJNBW to assist these women who will make a difference.  We plan to maintain contact with all six of these ladies.

CONDOLENCES

Kevin and Regina Quince lost Kevin's father and our sincere sympathies go out to the family.  Please keep the family in your prayers and thoughts.

CONGRATULATIONS

Liston Abbott  was one of the recipients on Oct. 20 of a "Shining Star" award presented by the Better Beginnings Day Care Center.  He was recognized for his many, many years of volunteer services to the Center and other volunteer work in the community.  The affair was held at the Ramada Inn and was very well attended and all had a very good time.  We also  like to thank Liston for all the work he graciously does for CJNBW.

BEST WISHES & CONTINUED Good Health TO:    Arlene Banks, Louise Smith, Ruth Timins daughter, Nicole, and the mothers of Marcia Duhart and Lorna Jones, and Shirley Vassall's  mother-in-law.

Illean Fussell's brother, Bill has been recuperating after being hospitalized.  He is doing very well and we wish him a speedy recovery and continued good health.

It is our intention to remember all who are ill, lost a loved one or congratulate members and their families when achievements are made.  However, you must let Joyce Abbott (448-4511) know so mention can be made in the Newsletter.

TIPS

Per Mrs. Fixit (Uses for Salt)

If you add a half cup of salt to the laundry when you wash blue jeans,  they'll come out nice and soft, and the color will last longer.

Soak a shirt that has perspiration stains in a strong solution of saltwater.  Run it through a cycle and the stains should be gone.

BIRTHDAYS
If your birthday has been overlooked,  contact Joyce Abbott  (448-4511)
