HAPPY MOTHERS' DAY

As we begin to unwind after the past ten months of CJNBW activities, I feel we’ve had a very successful year.  Our guest speakers provided information and insight into varied topics and ideas, and I’m sure we all took away something from each speaker.

I am looking forward to our next guest speaker, Ms. Satterfield, for our May 8 meeting.  As a reminder, she will speak about “The History of African Americans in Princeton”.  This should be a very interesting evening and I urge you to invite your family and friends.

We must start thinking of guest speakers for next year (starting Sep. 2007) and would appreciate your suggestions on topics or specific speakers that you would like to hear.  It’s not too early to start planning!

Please return your ballot to Ruth as soon as possible so that she can prepare the slate to elect new CJNBW officers at our May 8 meeting.

After the recent  April  Nor’easter, I do trust that you, your family and friends are all warm and dry. Remember those who are still recovering from flood damage of one kind or another. Also, remember those who are suffering because of the tragedy at Virginia Tech.  How difficult it must be for all of the families.

Lecture on Paul Robeson - Liberation Hall, 86 Olden St., Princeton Univ. "Carl Field Center for Equality and Cultural Understanding" (formerly known as "Third World Center."  Tribute is being paid to Mr. Robeson for his legacy.  This is his birth month.  The lecturer is Mr. Giles R. Wright, Dir. of the Afro-Am History Program, NJ Historical Commission.  No fee.

Tuesday, May 8;  Noontime Recital Series at Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church, 124 Witherspoon St., Princeton.  Featured musicians will be Beverly Owens, soprano,

(Musical Director at WSPC), Amy Short, piano, and Esma Pasic-Filipovic, piano.  They will perform music composed by Florence Price (Af-Am woman).  Free and open to the public.

This Committee is made up of the officers of the Network. We meet at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the Twin Rivers Library, 276 Abbington Dr., E. Windsor, NJ., (609-443-1880). Any member can attend these meetings, if so desired.

The Book Club - "Reading Between the Lines."

The next book is " The Measure of  A Man" by Sidney Poitier.  We will meet at Ruth's on June 15 at 7:00 p.m.

TIPS for May, 2007

Stop yellow leaves on plants

The sudden appearance of yellow leaves on plants accustomed to acidic soils – such as azaleas, hydrangeas, and gardenias – could signal a drop in the plant’s iron intake or a shift in the ground’s pH above a comfortable 5.0 level.  Either problem can be resolved by watering the soil around the plants once a week for three weeks with 1 cup of a solution made by mixing 2 tablespoons cider vinegar in 1 quart (1 liter) water.
