PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

My dear sisters:

What a festive start, the Holiday Party at Jessica’s, although it was technically a few days before January first!  The members and guests who attended enjoyed Jessica’s hospitality, the conversations, the delicious meal contributions, and as usual, Liston captured it all for posterity.  Check our web site to see the pictures.  The personal care products donated by members at the party were delivered to the Crisis Ministries last week.  Thanks, Jessica, Liston, and all who came and contributed.

We are reminded that we do good work in an article about us that appeared in today’s Times (Trenton) on last October’s Open House and the book award winners.  Thank you, Illean, for ensuring the coverage in both the Times and the Herald.  We should all be proud of the services that we provide as we strive to continue to be “sisters” in our communities and to each other.

This year’s Calendar starts with a presentation on “Elder Care” by Hattie and Shirley on January 13th at the Hickory Corner Library at 7:30 p.m.  This is a timely and necessary subject as we, our parents, friends, and partners age and face the issues of aging with all of its concerns.  Please encourage friends, neighbors, and colleagues to attend this worthy session.

Next month is Black History Month, and there will be so many activities and presentations competing for our attention.  Once again this year CJNBW will offer an entertaining and educational program in February.  Also, we have begun to plan for Women’s History in March, and then there will be the Woman of the Year celebration in the spring!  Such a full Calendar!

At our monthly meeting next week, in addition to the presentation, we will give all members an update of our plans for the year.  May you have joy in this new year, my sisters,

Always,

Noreen Lois

OTHER IMPORTANT  NOTES

Illean is working on a program for next month which is Black History Month.

We are still open to suggestions for a woman to be honored this year at our "Woman of the Year" program in May. Bring your names to the next meeting.

The Book Club (named  "Reading Between the Lines")  will be resuming on Friday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Ruth's home.  The book we will be reading and discussing is "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd.  Please be sure to let know Ruth if you plan to attend.

Steering Committee Corner This Committee is made up of the officers of the Network.  We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Twin Rivers Library, 276 Abbington Dr., E. Windsor, NJ.,  (609-443-1880).  Any member can attend these meetings, if so desired.
The Steering Committee met on Jan. 6 at the Twin Rivers Library.  Under discussion were the Holiday Party at Jessica's, which was a success.  Jessica was the ultimate hostess and we again thank her.  The articles submitted by Illean to the Windsor/Hights Herald and the Times regarding the Open House, recently appeared in both papers.  Thanks Illean.

Tentative plans for the coming months are: - February - " African American History Month" ; March - "Women's Issues"; April - Business Meeting; May - "Woman of the Year" program; June - Business Meeting.

Hattie and Joyce will be gathering information regarding a location to hold the "Woman of the Year" program in May. This will most likely be a luncheon.  More information regarding this will be forthcoming.  Please remember if you have a name to suggest, please contact our President or bring this information to the next meeting.

Please start thinking of a woman to honor in April for our Spring affair.

THANK YOU

We again would like to thank Jessica for being a wonderful hostess for our Holiday party.  She did a wonderful job and we loved her beautiful home.  Also, thanks to everyone who attended and remembered to bring the toiletries for donation to the Crisis Ministry which were delivered by our President.

Thanks to Illean for getting the articles in the Windsor/Hights and Times, re the Open House.

TIPS

Picnic Cooler:  Before you store a cooler, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda into it and stuff with crumpled newspapers to prevent a musty smell.  Also, try to store with the lid propped open to allow the air to circulate.  When you are ready to use the cooler again, dump the soda into the kitchen sink.  Run lots of water and the drain will be refreshed too!

CLOTHING COLLECTION

Clothing (in good condition and clean, for working women) are always needed by the Urban Women's Center, 1201 W. State St., Trenton.  Contact: Dir., Doris Williams (609) 989-1925) and Dress for Success, (also known as Suitably Dressed), 640 S. Broad St., Trenton (contact Mary - 989-6639 - from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.; Mon - Fri).  These organizations assist women who are returning to work and do not have the proper attire for work.  They also need shoes and handbags.  Thank you for your help in this matter.  Your donations will be greatly appreciated. If you have large donations, it would be best to contact these agencies and arrange for drop off and to find out if they have the space for large donations. They can use suits and other clothing  for men, also.

PLEASE KEEP THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS:   Ruth's sister, Laura, the mothers of Ruth, Marcia and Lorna, and Shirley's uncle. Also Shirley's husband who is recovering from surgery.

It is our intention to remember all who are ill, lost a loved one or congratulate members and their families when achievements are made.  However, you must let Joyce know so mention can be made in the Newsletter.
