PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

My dear sisters:

This is Black History Month, so let us all continue to celebrate our rich history and remember all who have paved the way for us. On February 10, Illean will lead an interesting presentation that requires us to volunteer to read some accounts of former slaves' memories.  Please bring a friend to enjoy the evening with us. Linda will host the gathering and I will ask our resident decorator, Louise, to do her usual wonderful job.

Hattie and Joyce will revisit the Hightstown Ramada where we plan to hold the "Woman of the Year" luncheon on May 2.  The prix fixe for entire meal will be discussed at our Feb. 10 meeting.  

We need to decide finally on a Woman of the Year.  We have a number of names, but no final choice.  Please let us have your nominations. We are planning to have 50 -75 guests on May 2.

Joyce will inform the Latina Women's Organization (via Ondina) that we will take a table on March 20 for the annual Health Fair at the Hightstown High School. We need volunteers to sign up to man the table. Please let me know at the regular monthly meeting on 2/10.

IMPORTANT DATES

Tues., Feb. 3 -  7:30 p.m. -  Steering Committee Meeting at Twin Rivers Library, Abbington Dr., Twin Rivers (443-1880).  

Tues., Feb. 10 - 7:30 p.m. -  Regular  Monthly Meeting at Hickory Corner Rd Library, 138 Hickory Corner Rd., E. Windsor (448-1332).  The meeting is open to anyone, especially to those interested in joining the CJNetwork.  As mentioned in the President's message, Illean will be leading a presentation involving former slaves' memories and we will be asked to volunteer to read some of these accounts. Remember to bring a friend/s.  Linda has graciously volunteered to host the evening and Louise will decorate.  Thanks to these ladies.
OTHER IMPORTANT  NOTES

Tues., March 2 - Mayor Janice Mironov to present  a proclamation for Women's History Month and we have been asked to send a representative.

Sat., March 20 - Annual Health Fair, sponsored by the Latina Women's Org., at Hightstown High School.  We will have a table and need volunteers to man the station.  More details to follow.  We need to keep our name visible.

FEBRUARY IS "WOMEN'S HEART HEALTH MONTH"

The Book Club (named  "Reading Between the Lines")  will be resuming on Friday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Ruth's home.  The book we will be reading and discussing is "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd.  Please be sure to let know Ruth if you plan to attend, so she can be ready for us. We'd love to have you there.
 
Steering Committee Corner This Committee is made up of the officers of the Network.  We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Twin Rivers Library, 276 Abbington Dr., E. Windsor, NJ.,  (609-443-1880).  Any member can attend these meetings, if so desired. 
 

The Woman of the Year  program, Sunday, May 2, will be a luncheon this year to be held at the Ramada Inn on Monmouth St., Hightstown. There is still time to submit names of persons to be recognized, so bring your suggestions to the Feb. 10 meeting as we must make a decision now.
 

CONGRATULATIONS

Anthony Houston (Joan Tomlin's son-in-law) has been appointed, by Gov. Bob Taft, to the Ohio Board of Regents, for a term beginning 1/12/04.  Tony and his wife Lisa have made several presentations and conducted workshops at CJNBW Ed. Fairs.  We wish him lots of luck.

 

TIPS

Microwave: To clean and eliminate odor, combine 2 tablespoons baking soda with 1 cup of water in a large microwave safe bowl.  Place in the microwave and turn it on high for 2 to 3 minutes.  This will soften the spills so you can wipe them up and the smells will be gone.  Be careful when you open the door because the steam will be hot.

CLOTHING COLLECTION

Clothing (in good condition and clean, for working women) are always needed by the Urban Women's Center, 1201 W. State St., Trenton.  Contact: Dir., Doris Williams (609) 989-1925) and Dress for Success, (also known as Suitably Dressed), 640 S. Broad St., Trenton (contact Mary - 989-6639 - from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.; Mon - Fri).  These organizations assist women who are returning to work and do not have the proper attire for work.  They also need shoes and handbags.  Thank you for your help in this matter.  Your donations will be greatly appreciated. If you have large donations, it would be best to contact these agencies and arrange for drop off and to find out if they have the space for large donations. They can use suits and other clothing  for men, also.
 
PLEASE KEEP THE FOLLOWING INDIVIDUALS IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS:   Ruth's sister, Laurel, the mothers of Ruth, Marcia and Lorna, and Shirley's uncle.

It is our intention to remember all who are ill, lost a loved one or congratulate members and their families when achievements are made.  However, you must let Joyce know so mention can be made in the Newsletter.
