Dear Sisters:
The announcement of the unexpected
death of Ossie Davis was saddening. Mr. Davis and Ruby
Dee, his wife and artistic partner for over half a
century, are credited for having contributed so much to
American arts and to the politics that affect the lives of
African Americans. His
was a full and rich life, and he died while continuing his
beloved work, acting, always with a social conscience. We have lost a
hero.
Our own work as members of the
Central Jersey Network of Black Women pales next to that
of the truly great like Ossie Davis. However, our
contributions, scholarships to college and high school
students, donations to local charities, and honoring the
lives of those who give so much, cannot be dismissed. We should be
proud.
Next month at our Open House on March 13th,
CJNBW will once again |
|
present academic support awards to
several New Jersey women who are college students. To date, we have had inquiries and nominations from six (6)
New Jersey colleges, and we expect to announce the
awardees by the end of February. Members and their
friends are strongly encouraged to attend the Open House
and demonstrate our personal support for these women and
their struggles to achieve their academic goals.
As the rest of the nation celebrates
African American History month, CJNBW will present an
evening of poetry and prose readings, moderated by Illean
on February 8th at the Hickory Corner Library
at 7:30 p.m. Please
send this newsletter with this announcement to at least
one friend, inviting him or her to bring a piece of
literature to share with us.
Cheers,
