Former Central High School Science Teacher Visits the White House!
On September 27th, Dr. Lillian A. Rankel, a former science teacher who worked at CHS from 1996 to July 2010, was invited to the White House to meet with Kareem A. Dale, Special Assistant to the President for Disability Policy. Dr. Rankel, along with other Independence Science, LLC personnel, demonstrated educational products and services that enable students affected by blindness and low vision to experience more hands-on science learning. This informational visit is in response to President Obama’s desire to encourage more students to go into the STEM professions (science, technology, engineering and math). Dr. Rankel’s work began at CHS in 2005 when she had a blind student in her Honors Chemistry Class. She immediately set about forming contacts and working with other scientists to make all laboratory experiments accessible to her blind student. We applaud Dr. Rankel’s efforts to inspire students affected by blindness or low-vision to consider career paths in these areas and we are grateful to have had her as a teacher in our district. We wish her continued success.
