Princeton Public Schools Appoints Next Principal of Princeton High School

(Princeton, NJ) At its Board Meeting on March 19, 2019, the Princeton Public Schools Board of Education appointed Jessica Baxter as the next principal of Princeton High School. Ms. Baxter, currently PHS's assistant principal, was chosen after a national search and a comprehensive selection process involving students, staff, parents and community members.

"Jessica has shown her ability in nearly eight years as an assistant principal to care deeply about our students, to effectively lead high-level change, and to get things done on a daily basis," said Superintendent Steve Cochrane.

"I have tremendous confidence in Jessica," Cochrane continued. "She is a powerful voice for equity in our schools; she truly understands the issues of wellness faced by our students; and she has been instrumental in supporting teachers in their shift to more authentic, problem-based learning.  Equally significant, she believes in schools as places of celebration.  I look forward to working with Ms. Baxter and her entire team to build on the steps already taken at PHS – and to do so in partnership with our community and with a renewed sense of joy for students, staff and families."

Among her many accomplishments as PHS assistant principal, Ms. Baxter is the district anti-bullying coordinator and president of the Princeton Administrators Association. She was the lead in implementing the Challenge Success student-engagement survey at the high school as well as in analyzing and presenting the results. She co-chaired a committee that recently recommended a later start time and new bell schedule at PHS, and she is responsible for developing the school's master schedule each year.

Ms. Baxter holds an M.A. in Educational Leadership from the College of Saint Elizabeth and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Montclair State University, where she earned a B.A. in Spanish Education. She is fluent in Spanish, and, prior to joining PHS in 2012, she was a Spanish and ESL teacher at Hanover Park High School.

"Having been named PHS principal is one of the greatest honors I have been bestowed, and I take the responsibility seriously and enthusiastically," said Ms. Baxter. "I'm excited to work on initiatives with Mr. Cochrane and the PHS faculty as we continue our work of building and maintaining a healthy, inclusive and strong PHS."  She will assume her new role when current principal Gary Snyder retires at the end of the school year.

"Jessica recognizes the tremendous responsibility of serving as the principal of PHS," said Cochrane. "She is the right person at the right time to help our high school take the next steps in becoming a beacon of innovation, partnership, and care."
