The Crossing, Washington Crossing Historic Park
Each December, thousands of people gather on the banks of the Delaware River to watch the reenactment of George Washington’s daring 1776 Christmas night river crossing. During the event, several hundred reenactors in Continental military dress listen to an inspiring speech by General Washington and then row across the river in replica Durham boats. Candlelight Holiday Tours, Rockingham
Have you heard of Martha Washington or Abigail Adams, maybe Phyllis Wheatley or Patience Wright? What about Mumbet, Nanye'hi or Sarah Bradlee Fulton? Rockingham will be presenting its annual Candlelight Holiday Tours on Sunday, December 8th from 11 am to 4 pm. This year's theme-tour will celebrate women of the 18th century, from diverse walks of life, well-known and not so well-known. It may include the women mentioned above and many in-between. Poetess, sculptor, enslaved woman, morale-booster, soldier, spy, farm woman, Native American leader, camp follower and many others. The Holidays at Westminster festival of holiday music begins with a performance by jazz pianist Phil Orr on Sunday, December 8 at 3 p.m. in the Robert L. Annis Playhouse on the Westminster Choir College of Rider University campus in Princeton. Phil Orr and More: Jingle Bell Jazz features pianist Philip Orr, joined by nationally recognized, multi-genre musicians Michael O'Brien on bass, and Sean Dixon on drums. They'll perform traditional yule fare such as "Jingle Bells," "Carol of the Drums," and "All I Want for Christmas is You" plus other holiday favorites in thoughtful reworkings in swing, post-bop, Brazilian, Afro-Latin, New Orleans and even klezmer-infused jazz styles. The meetings are informal readings in which any musically interested person may join the chorus. There are no separate rehearsals and no auditions. Conductors usually do some preparation with the chorus before the sing-through. This varies from minimal snatches for well-known pieces to a complete review for unfamiliar works.
