#OptOutside on Black Friday at Mercer Park

The Mercer County Park Commission and REI movement to #OptOutside continues this year on Friday, Nov. 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Take a break from Black Friday shopping and enjoy the outdoors in the County parks with a variety of activities to choose from. Work off some of that Thanksgiving meal with the Nature Programs and REI where participants can complete a scavenger hunt in Roebling Park or Mercer Meadows, or a hike to the summit of Baldpate Mountain.

10:30am - Season of Light - Season of Light explores the reasons humans are so fascinated with lighting up our lives during the December holiday season. Discover the astronomical meanings behind different seasonal traditions, including the "Star over Bethlehem."

11:30am - Laser Holiday Magic - Our new full-spectrum laser beams dance along with dazzling animated laser effects set to popular holiday music such as Winter Wonderland, Frosty the Snowman and many more. Enjoy a unique, festive experience under the stars at New Jersey’s largest full dome planetarium. Suitable for general audiences.  

1:30pm - CapCom Go! -The Apollo Story - An immersive, historical documentary that showcases the achievements of the Apollo program and what it took to put the first human on the Moon. It introduces a new generation to the immense challenges they overcame and will inspire them to become the explorers, designers, engineers, thinkers and dreamers of the future. Suitable for all ages. This show is a great way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, and a perfect complement to the exhibition “Many Inspired Steps” on view in the Riverside Gallery May 25 through November 10.

OptOutside Event, Friends of Princeton of Open Space

On Friday, November 29, 2019, Friends of Princeton Open Space (FOPOS), a nonprofit devoted to preservation and stewardship of land in Princeton, will host their annual OptOutside event at the Mountain Lakes House in the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve, 57 Mountain Avenue, Princeton.

#OptOutside is a movement to encourage people to spend time in nature rather than in crowded stores Black Friday shopping the day after Thanksgiving. The community is invited to the Mountain Lakes House to enjoy a nature-themed art activity, music, cider and snacks from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. Trail maps will be available for walks and hikes before or after the event. All ages are welcome to this free, rain or shine event. While the event is free, attendees are requested to pre-register via Eventbrite.com (search “OptOutside in Princeton”), to help FOPOS plan for attendance numbers.


American Repertory Ballet's Nutcracker, McCarter Theater - Two Performances

American Repertory Ballet brings the beloved classic Nutcracker to the stage with Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score, thrilling choreography and a cast of more than 100. A holiday tradition for more than 50 years (1964), American Repertory Ballet’s Nutcracker is one of the longest, continuously running Nutcracker productions in the nation. ARB’s professional company will be joined by select students from Princeton Ballet School to tell the story of a young girl named Clara and how a mysterious gift from her Uncle Drosselmeyer brings about enchanted dreams and fantastical scenes.

4th Annual Soul-Filled Ceramics, Arts Council of Princeton

The Arts Council of Princeton's ceramics community is hosting the 4th annual Soul-Filled Ceramics on Friday, November 29, 4-7 pm. After the Palmer Square Tree Lighting, stop by the Arts Council's Taplin Gallery to purchase beautiful handmade mugs by local ceramic artists for $25 each.

With the purchase of a mug, shoppers can enjoy a complimentary cup of hot chocolate or coffee. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Arts Council of Princeton kiln fund and Meals on Wheels of Mercer County. Thank you to refreshment donors The Italian Peoples Bakery, Small World Coffee, Solebury Orchards, and BJ's Wholesale Club. On Christmas Eve, however, Scrooge is in store for a rude awakening when he is visited by the ghost of his old business partner, Jacob Marley, who informs him that he is going to be visited by three spirits - the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.
