Adath Israel Congregation Awarded Solomon Schechter Award

Adath Israel Congregation is happy to announce that our Religious School was awarded a Solomon Schechter Award from the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. These national awards given by the Conservative movement recognize innovative and compelling synagogue initiatives. Adath is proud to have won Schechter Awards in the past for Israel and Special Needs programing.

This year we won for our Wheels to Israel - Maccabi Wheelchair Basketball Event, the brainchild of our Resource Program educator, Sharon Brooks.

Sharon was able to bring Matt Darlow, head coach and member of the United States Maccabi Wheelchair Basketball team, to our congregation to give the students an idea of what it is like to use his wheelchair in everyday life and on the court. He spoke to the students about the challenges he faces, but also the opportunities as well.

The children got a chance to sit in Matt’s chair, try to navigate a short obstacle course, and dribble a basketball while seated (not an easy task). They learned about the differences between a regular wheelchair and one specially designed for basketball. Afterwards the kids received trading cards with Matt’s image which he was happy to sign as keepsakes.

Often our society presents those with disabilities as people who require help and pity, but the beauty of this program was that our Religious School students saw Matt as a sports hero, someone to look up to who is representing his country and his people.

The children also learned about Maccabiah, the world Olympic-like competition every four years that brings together Jewish athletes in Israel for competition and fellowship. The students in the Religious School also raised money to help Matt make his trip to the games. Wheels to Israel was a win for everyone – Adath, our students, and Matt.

While we received a Schechter Award, the Maccabiah games took place July 4 – 18 and the Team USA Wheelchair Basketball Team won the bronze medal!
