COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Community Support and Suicide Prevention

will offer two 40 hour training courses for prospective HOTLINE VOLUNTEERS beginning Tuesday, September 12, 2017 and running weekly through November 21st; mornings 9:30am-12:30pm and evenings 7:30-10:30pm. A one hour, no obligation, orientation session will be held on Sept 12 at 9:30am and 7:30pm at the Pennington United Methodist Church, 60 South Main Street, Pennington, NJ 08534. The classes teach compassionate listening skills, telephone crisis intervention, suicide prevention, addiction awareness and much more. Representatives from community agencies are speakers on a variety of topics. Taking this course is a great way to become a better listener and help other people through CONTACT. Attention, Photographers! “Mercer County Photography 2017,” a juried competition, will take place Oct. 26 through Dec. 8 at the Silva Gallery of Art at The Pennington School. The Lawrence Hopewell Trail is seeking comment and feedback from area residents in a brief survey in advance of its first annual LHT Community Meeting, to be held in November. With about 90 percent of the 22+ mile biking and walking trail completed, community involvement is more important than ever. To participate, please visit this link.


Call for Volunteers - If you are interested in helping build bridges in our community, then we have an opportunity for you! Literacy New Jersey, Mercer County trains volunteers to meet with adults who need to improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills so that they can become an integral part of our community. Many of our adult students come from other countries, so you will learn about new cultures and different points of view. We have a long waiting list of students who need our help. Join our 15 hour, tutor training course which starts on September 6, 10:00-1:00 and continues each Wednesday at the same time through October 4 (five Mondays in all). It will be at the Hamilton Library. We offer the same course on Thursday evenings from 6:00-9:00 at the Princeton Community Church (9/7-10/5). This special afternoon is planned for Sunday, October 1, the day after the Sept. 30th March for Racial Justice in Washington, DC. The event is being organized by the Central Jersey Coalition for Justice, whose members represent local activist and faith-based groups dedicated to promoting racial justice. 10/2 - Public Debate for Mayoral & Council Candidates, 10am., The West Windsor Retirees Group and the Village Grande Civic Association plan jointly to sponsor a public debate among certified candidates for election as mayor and for two vacancies on the Municipal Council. The debate will be held in the Municipal Council Chamber, broadcast live over local TV channels and rebroadcast at frequent intervals up until the General Election on November 7. 609-452-2046
