Van Gogh did not begin painting until his late twenties, and most of his better-known works were produced during his final two years. Producing more than 2000 artworks consisting of around 900 paintings and 1100 drawings and sketches, along with over 2000 letters (mostly between Van Gogh and his brother Theo), historians are able to discern the man whose works are so admired today and are able to explore the mystery of his death.
