Managing Summer Energy Usage

Like many people, you may be spending more time at home due to the current health crisis, which can result in increased energy usage. And with rising temperatures, fans and air conditioners will also mean using more energy.

Follow these tips to reduce energy use this summer:

  • Install a programmable thermostat. Raise the setting to the highest comfortable temperature. You can save 3-5% on air conditioning costs for each degree you raise the temperature. For information about smart thermostat rebates, see the article in this newsletter, “Save Energy and Money This Summer with a Smart Thermostat.”

  • Close blinds, shades and curtains facing the sun to keep out the sun's heat and help fans and air conditioners cool more efficiently.

  • Turn off power sources. Many TVs, computers, and other electronics continue to draw power when hibernating in standby mode, or even when turned off. Plug electronics into a power strip that can be turned off when not in use.

  • Close doors to unused rooms. If you have central air, close doors and vents to unused rooms to reduce the area your system must cool.
