Lewis B. Cuyler Lecture: The Nonconsecutive Presidents, Historical Society of Princeton

In American history, there have been just two presidents to serve nonconsecutive terms. Historian Brian Armstrong compares the 1890s, when Grover Cleveland won his second term, to today, with the election of Donald J. Trump. Though more than a century apart, similar issues surrounded both presidencies, including tariffs, alternative currencies, close elections, populist speakers, rejected incumbents, the mega rich, foreign migrants, maverick candidates, economic problems, and increasing presidential power.
