Trenton Circus Squad Awarded Prestigious NJ State Council of the Arts Grant

TRENTON, NJ – (September 4, 2019) Trenton Circus Squad has been awarded a 3-year grant from the State Council of the Arts towards general operating and programming expenses. The grant is part of a larger investment of $15.7 million from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts to support 700 arts organizations, projects, and artists throughout the state.

Trenton Circus Squad inspires young people to take big leaps in life. Squad members learn how to cooperate, push themselves and serve their community – all through the astonishing practice of circus arts.  Programming is free and open to all youth ages 12-18. Trenton Circus Squad helps develop responsible, connected, capable, kind, resourceful adolescents. These young people provide the state of New Jersey with engaging, artistic, community-building activities specifically targeting under-served families and communities. Trenton Circus Squad encourages tangible improvements in the abilities of the teens to make positive choices in their own lives and to take actions that benefit others.

Economically disadvantaged young people from Trenton work side by side with youth from higher income communities around Mercer County to create performances. They then perform for nursing homes, hospitals, homeless shelters, etc. They also teach workshops to younger children ages (6-11), sharing their challenging, physical, circus-based skills at a high level.

"It is extremely humbling and we are deeply honored to be recognized as a statewide arts organization after only 4 years of operation.  We couldn't be more excited to share our programming with even more communities outside of Trenton.  Hopefully, they will experience the same impact and community building we've been able to establish throughout Mercer County."

                                                            ~Tom von Oehsen, Executive Director

The New Jersey State Council on the Arts, created in 1966, is a division of the NJ Department of State. The Council was established to encourage and foster public interest in the arts; enlarge public and private resources devoted to the arts; promote freedom of expression in the arts; and facilitate the inclusion of art in every public building in New Jersey.
