Jimmy Ruckfutgers' Hat Trick


His first brought us red dresses, weddings in
the gardens, long distances and horse bound, 
police-like lasses.

The second brought Halloween merriment, irate golfers
and downtown bars.

1836	Spain recognises the independence of Mexico.
1856	Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton, Virginia. 
        The twenty-eighth president of the United States, Wilson served two consecutive terms 
        in the White House, from 1913 to 1921. Before entering politics, Wilson taught at Bryn 
        Mawr College and Wesleyan University, and later served as president of Princeton University. 
        At Princeton, he earned a national reputation for his political addresses and articles, 
        which contributed to his election as governor of New Jersey in 1910. Two years later, the 
        Democratic National Convention nominated Wilson to run for president.  On the day before 
        Wilson's inauguration in March 1913, members of the Congressional Union, later known as the 
        National Women's Party, organized a suffrage parade in Washington, D.C. to siphon attention 
        away from inaugural events. It is said that when Wilson arrived in town, he found the 
        streets empty of welcoming crowds and was told that everyone was on Pennsylvania Avenue 
        watching the parade.
1869	William F. Semple of Mount Vernon, Ohio, becomes the first person to receive a patent for 
        chewing gum.
1882	Birth of Arthur Eddington, British astronomer, mathematician and pioneer in the field of 
        cosmology.
1895	The Lumiere brothers, Antoine and Louis, unveil their Cinematograph in the basement of the 
        Grand Cafe in Paris.
1895	Death of Phan Dinh Phung (born 1844), leader of a royalist movement against the French in 
        Huong Son and Huong Khe in the province of Ha Tinh, central Viet Nam (1885 – 1896).
1908	Over 82,000 people are killed in an earthquake which reduced Messina, Sicily’s second town, 
        to rubble. A tidal wave that followed caused more devastation.
1923	Death of Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, renowned for the tower in Paris that bears his name.
1925	Death of Nguyen Thuong Hien (born 1868), leader of various patriotic movements against the 
        French in Viet Nam.
1942	Japanese planes bomb Calcutta, India, in World War II.
1966	China detonates its fifth atomic bomb.
1974	An earthquake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, destroys villages in the Karakom Mountains 
        in Pakistan, leaving 5,200 dead and over 16,000 injured.
1975	Death of Luong Dinh Cua (born 1921), Vietnamese agronomist, inventor of many high-yielding 
        rice varieties.
1985	After four months of negotiations, a Syrian-brokered cease-fire is agreed between Lebanon’s 
        Moslem and Christian militias.
1989	The Socialist Republic of Viet Nam adopts a press law.
1995	China names the committee responsible for steering Hong Kong through its transition from 
        British colony to Chinese Special Administration Region in 1997.
1999	Taking last-minute Y2K precautions, the US Defence Department shuts down its Internet site to 
        keep it safe from hackers. Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces declare the nuclear arsenal and 
        defence satellites prepared for a transition into the year 2000. 
2003	Jimmy RuckFutgers caps off hat-trick of hopeless new Brunswick hashes, bring the year to a 
        close (just in the nick of time).

	

Astonishingly enough, all the hounds made it to the on-in and were regaled with cold beer (as promised) 
and home-made Mexican food.  The festive spirit abounded as we went through our entire repertoire of 
songs (2), repeling innocent bystanders and making the people living under the bridges wonder why the 
neighborhood was going downhill.  The Polish Twins suffered an identity crisis, am I A or are you C? 
Being unable to untangle the mystery, they decided to merge their identities and become Polish Twin B.  
As Weatherman might aver, A+C=B.
