Nobody was Fooled

    Discomfort did her best, she really did.  She tried telling everyone
that the hash started an hour earlier on Daylight Savings Day, but
anyone who was anyone or sober showed up at the appointed hour.  Warned
us of vindictive shopkeepers who stole her flour and jackbooted thugs
purporting to be policemen who asked her embarassing questions about her
name.  Laid natural born checkmark after unnatural checkmarks only to
lead us invariably into awesome cedar woods devoid of spiders and trails
filled with lost cub scout patrols. Tried to keep it natural before
flogging us all on road and towpath straightaways that only Rubber and
Paully would envy.  Explained that she had bought "lots to drink, root
beer, soda. . ." but inexplicably left the bevvies in her woolens chest
at home, leaving us to drink water from a recycled milk jug and the
cavity in the door of her car's trunk.  Were the specimen cups purloined
or borrowed, new or rinsed?  We knew they weren't from Walmart.  Was
there beer?  In so many words, no, but she wasn't pulling the wool over
anyone's eyes.
    Fortunately today, April 2 is, by Ann Landers's mandate,
Reconciliation Day.  Don't confuse this solemn day of fencemending and
stonewalling with Australia's Reconciliation Day (January 27), or South
Africa's (December 16), or the University of British Columbia's (May
2).  Yes, today we are all to call and email old enemies within the
family and out, forgive and forget, just like the relative of Longtime
