The year had been plagued by one debacle after another. Seeking advice, I was sorely disappointed; had we only found that sheep! Yet here I was, late on a Wednesday night, sitting in the back room of the old bombed out BelleMead Inn with The Cuban Assassin and Jorge. The STORY (and I'm sticking with it!) "Dammit, Assassin! Why did you let her in here? You know RoJo is the only woman I'll allow in this place!!!" "Calm down Jorge! This is no ordinary female, this is Speed Bumps, toady to RoJo and the only woman to approach 100 hashes in years. She may even hit that in under three years. Even you have to respect that degree of pathetic." "OK, OK. Have a cold one and tell us about the hash, Bumps" "Well," I began, accepting the ale, "I've never seen anything like it. There were 24 hashers at the start" "24?" gasped the Assassin. "Shit, there have been smaller turnouts for Hard Cores and G hashes! What brought them out?" "I'm only guessing," I continued, "but rumor had it that the LRF was setting. You could feel the electricity in the air. Hashers were milling about at the start; veterans commenting that they wouldn't miss an LRF set and rookies hoping to at last catch a glimpse the legend." "Ha!! Remember when they used to say that about you?! laughed Jorge. "Now they just yawn and cry "Boring!" when your name comes up!" "That's enough!" The Assassin slammed a long neck bottle down on the table and waved the jagged edge menacingly in Jorge's face. "Gentlemen!" I cried. "Today's hash, remember?" "Hmmmph" growled the Assassin. "OK, go on." "At the start there was no sign of the LRF; not too unusual, so we found the trail and ran, hoping to catch sight of him along the way. What a splendid set it was! RR tracks with speeding Metroliners, corn fields as far as the eye could see, aromatic ankle sucking mud, and walls of shiggy that would have caused spontaneous bleeding in the Geezer." "Thorns?" said the Assasin. "Hmmm... then what?" "Well, we reached the cooler and there was still no LRF. So we drank the beer, ate the chips, pork rinds, and oreos, did down downs for the virgins; all the while Wacko kept vigil on the bridge for signs of the LRF. He never did show. I hesitate to say it, but, Assassin, it was like when you first set!" "Interesting" said Jorge, as he leaned back in his chair and took a long, thoughtful sip of his beer. What do you make of this, Assassin?" "Well..." the Assassin paused, one could tell he was at a loss. "We may have the makings of a new Hash legend here tonight. I knew things weren't right... by the way, Bumps, were the hell is RoJo? She was supposed to be here with that take out from the House of Shih by now!" "Calm down, have another beer" I said as I passed a couple of cold ones across the table. Deep inside, I knew it was over. The curse had been lifted, but we had paid a price. We may never see the LRF again, only his haunting flour marks in the bayous of Princeton. So I, too, kicked back, opened another beer and waited for RoJo, hoping that she wouldn't tell the Assassin that the House of Shih has been closed for two years now, and had remembered the toenail polish so that I could escape, unnoticed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NEXT HASHES: #728.4 Wed, Aug 11, 1999, 6 pm, 87 Prospect, Throatwarbler Mangrove sets. #729.4 Wed, Aug 18, 1999, 6 pm, 87 Prospect, Table Toes Sets. #730.4, Wed, Aug 25, 1999, 6 pm, 87 Prospect, ????
