PRINCETON HHH HASH #585.4 Date: December 15, 1996 Weather: It Could've Been Worse Venue: Somerset County - The whole county! Belle Meade Inn - Mountain View Rd. - East Mountain Rd. - Amwell Rd. - South Branch Road - Railroad Tracks - More Railroad Tracks - Still More Railroad Tracks - Valley Rd. - Farm Rd. Time: 1 hr. 59 minutes - True Trail, 8.5 miles Set By: Delay Lllama Hashers: Hand Solo, RoJo, 242, In Up To His Waist, Dan "Pyro Man" Torok, I'm So Dirty, Rich "NEEDS A NAME" Sarpong, Paul DiMeglio, Chris Jones, Wacko, Wrong Way, Hey Yo Paully RAILROADED There was plenty of time during this week's hash for the debate to rage - clueless or malevolent. Two or three times a year, perhaps due to his book, perhaps an injury, gout, the Giants, whatever, the GM puts the Delay Lllama down to set and then conspicuously vanishes, waiting for the inevitable tales of horror. I think it's malevolence. The marvel of this week's nightmare is that it was actually an improvement over previous Lllama sets - the tragedy was that the grand miscalculation this week was LENGTH!!! It's one thing to consistently run us on roads, this we've come to expect from the Lllama - but 8+ miles of it!!!!?!?!?! There were bad omens from the start - but with Lllama setting, that statement is as oxymoronic as the hare. First, even though we were starting at the infamous Belle Meade Inn, Zaire and the Assassin were nowhere to be found. Perhaps they fled before word of a Lllama set or perhaps they conspired with him in the deed. Second, the Lllama announced that he had to run on roads more than he would have liked because of hunters, offering a hunter's vest for protection to any concerned hounds. Hey Yo Paully accepted. Third, he promised we wouldn't just be on roads, mentioning something about railroad tracks. And now, let's discuss the improvement. The hash DID NOT START with a 3/4 mile false trail!! Actually, we immediately found ourselves desecrating a cemetery and wandering aimlessly through a field!! Indeed, we were 15 minutes into the hash and almost a mile on our way before we hit the first endless straight down a road. There you go! One quarter of a hash, and it was actually decent. But then, of course, the true Lllama took over. TIME INTO THE HASH WHERE WE WERE 20-28 minutes Running down Mountain View Road - Regroup 2 miles into the hash 30-44 minutes Continue down Mountain View Road and turn up East Mountain Road - run to Amwell Road. 3.75 miles into the hash - 24 minutes and roughly 3 miles of solid road running with one regroup. Good workout. 44-60 minutes Solo & 242 run the true trail - the rest of us short cut up Amwell Rd. Bypass - cut through to Amwell Rd and then down South Branch Rd. to the railroad tracks. 5.2 miles into the hash. Mile 5.2 - 5.5 Here, the Lllama had another lapse, the trail dipped into some woods and a swamp of green slime before emerging into a construction site and then onto some railroad tracks. A hashing good time. It would have been a nice place to end after an hour plus and 5.5 miles of running. Hah. Mile 5.5-7.5 The record for longest railroad straight long held by Flasher Gordon and Chef Boy Rob Diertl is no longer. Two miles! Two miles down the tracks - and they were miles 5.5 to 7.5. Shades of Sean Smith's ultimate hash of pain! (For you new boots, Sean Smith set the legendary record, a 2.5 hour hash for all but the Dreaded Kaufman Brothers who took 3-and-a-half hours. Rumor has it that Sean Smith is back in N.J. but hasn't shown his face in Princeton now that we've recovered enough to kill him.) By the end of the tracks, even marathon runners Chris Jones, Hey Yo Paully and Hand Solo were slowing down - 242 was even more delirious than usual - Wrong Way was carrying his left leg - and Paul DiMeglio was staggering in after lying down on the railroad tracks praying for a train. But we still had.... Mile 7.5-8.5 A final mile down the road to the apres. The hounds were so relieved and exhausted that once again the hare survived, unscathed, with only a dixie-cup Down Down. Curse the GM. We won't be fooled again! Next Hashes: ONLY 10 MORE WEEKS TO THE HARD CORE HASH!!!!! BETTER START TRAINING!!!!!!!
