Descriptions, comments, polemics, and lies: I ran into Zaire at his usual
table in the back of the Belle Meade Inn. He was drinking a Stegmeier and
there was a shot glass full of a liquid the color of tar in front of him.
He was alternately screaming in Portuguese at the bartender, flecks of foam
escaping his lips now and then, or gazing pensively at the smoky ceiling. 
It was clearly a moment of introspection for Zaire, but it was laced with
the menace of random violence that never leaves him.  

"What's up this Sunday," I asked, knowing he had already set. "I don'
know," came the slurred reply, as his eyes unfocused and he threw the
half-full Stegmeier bottle at the bartender. "These days I just don' know.
Wacko's married, the Geezer's always hurt, no one's seen Toxic for years.
Why am I still pulling myself through those thorns? More Steg, dammit,
Jorge!"  It was then that I noticed the pile of dead geese on the floor
behind him. He saw me look and just barely smiled. "Yes, there is still
some fun in setting," he said, "It's not completely pointless; I can always
do something for population control."  He laughed maniacally and kicked the
pile of extinct geese with his boot.  I imagined I could hear a pitiful
muffled honk. "Ah, maybe it ain't so bad, there's always the Apres,"
laughed Zaire, and another Steg flew across the room, nearly decapitating
the unfortunate Jorge, as it smashed into the picture of Ronald Reagan on
the far wall. 

It was definitely time to leave, and as I did so I could see Jorge hustling
another Stegmeier, and hear Zaire muttering, "And you can always stop to
smell the flowers."

Anniversaries: Next week will be the Delay LLLama's 100th hash. He will
become only the 9th person to achieve that mark. Who's next? Maybe 242, if
he hangs around long enough. Rojo is approaching 150, and dare I say it,
Wacko is only 19 from 400. Oh my oh my oh my.
