Rookie: Tara Woolford Descriptions, comments, polemics, and lies: Hash 518.4 was yet another black mark against the name of August 9th, already one of the most dolorous days in human history. Nagasaki was nuked, Jerry Garcia dies, and now this. Well, there are good days and bad days, it seems. We started on Bunker Hill Golf Course. With all the green pants set cowering in their bunkers, it seemed the perfect time for a cross fairway excursion, but, alas, we were led instead down the asphalt past taunting churchgoers, finally entering the woods on the south side of the road, ultimately recapitulating some of Wacko's fine effort of 1991 (#319.4). Much woods thrashing enlivened by a nice half-mile downhill false and the emergence of the Heron Lady as a ghostly figure on the banks of a foetid stream, murmuring quietly to an astonished pack, "Please be quiet, you mustn't frighten the herons." "Herons are excellent deep fried," commented the Geezer churlishly, and the Heron Lady gasped audibly. There are those who say she then lifted quietly into the darkening skies; at any rate all we could hear from the stream bed was the whir of mighty wings and the ominous clacking of an enormous beak. It's clear that it's not a good idea to sass Mother Heron. We left quickly. On to the canal just past the Griggstown bridge where the old boat trick was trotted out, and the usual piracy threatened. Back to the road, and into a splendidly muddy, nettle-infested loop to the parking lot hard by the terminus of Effross' 25 minute travesty of yesteryear (#178.2). Dry Martinez produced dry martinis, but we ran out of beer. Next Hashes: #519.4 Wednesday, August 16th, 6 pm, 242 sets #520.4 Wednesday, August 23rd, 6 pm, Little Fragile Broken Bone sets
