WASTE WASTES WAIST'S WAIST "Who is Toxic Waste? Have I ever met him?" grumbled most of the Princeton Hash House Harriers. The answer is most likely "No", as he hasn't joined us in over two years (according to the Geezer's flawless accounting system). By the end of the day, some would no doubt wish they still hadn't met him. At the top of this list would be the ill-starred, In Up To His Waist (IUTHW). IUTHW should have taken his Julius Cūsar to heart before joining this "Ides of" march through the New Jersey wastelands. Barely a hundred yards from the start, (a Shop & Bag parking lot in downtown Trenton seedy enough for Wacko to lock the hashvan for the first time), IUTHW found himself running tandem with the Geezer on the wrong side of an endless fence. Their decision to climb the pointed structure was hastened by the inquisitive junkyard residents into whose homes the pair had ventured uninvited. Despite the Geezer's agile illustration of proper scaling technique, vital parts of IUTHW's anatomy were definitely at risk, and the neighborhood was salivating in anticipation of some scrumptious new vittles for dinner. However, it appeared that IUTHW did manage to rise to the occasion and might hope to again in the future. ON ON we went - hopes dashed when the trail ducked left into some harmless woods after approaching teasingly close to a wonderful sludge factory. Past some catcalling youngsters behind a school and it was back out into beautiful downtown Trenton. As we rounded the corner of a cemetery, IUTHW made his bid for early admission, slipping on what appeared to be sawdust, and ripping a sizable swath of flesh off his waist as he slid along the pavement. It was dramatic enough that Ro Jo slowed perceptibly and the Geezer actually veered two steps to avoid trampling him. Meanwhile, LFBB had shortcutted into the lead, engaging in some blatant silent running that would have made Dr. No proud. Wacko screamed at him from fifty yards away "Are YOOOOOU!" but merely got indecipherable hand gestures in response. Once the LFBB was caught, an impromptu regroup was called which ironically only managed to separate the pack further. Some Nerd led half the hounds on a short cut with the other half constantly looking back over their shoulders with concern. Hands Job even tried to encourage street urchins to yell "On On" in an effort to leave vocal trailmarks for the others, who were in fact, way out in front. The trailing pack descended into John Roebling Park - (several hundred acres of godforsaken swampland criscrossed by a half dozen trails) - and were met by the distant, siren-like cries of the frontrunners, which tempted a couple of the severely mindless (and nameless) to crash off blindly into some truly harsh, reed-filled rot before discovering the true trail which looked like a highway in comparison. The frontrunners were reeled in just in time to watch IUTHW infect his wound in a vile stream-crossing even as Hand Solo stood on the near bank realizing that the mark at his feet was an "F". (I wouldn't have wanted to have been Ro Jo driving home with IUTHW after the hash. It was dangerous just being near the guy, today. As a matter of fact, has anyone heard from Ro Jo?) The end of the hash was imminent, given handy advice from some lecherous tikes along the trail who informed us that "a guy with glasses and a bucket of flour" had gone that-a-way and that another guy (Some Nerd) was way ahead of us. After one more quick jaunt and a few more of what may have been a record number of falsies, we were On In and fighting off Zeke for the beer. (Good thing, cos Zeke ended up driving us home.)
