There Goes the Neighborhood

Description, polemics, comments and lies: 

“What a sweet young couple,” was the prevailing sentiment on Saturday, as the Greater 
Hopewell Valley Committee for the Preservation of Traditional Values and Morals 
(GHVCPTVM) met to consider the application of the Warbler and Mrs. Warbler to buy 
into their exclusive community. “Yes, and he’s a golfer, too,” said Mavis Sweat, 
chairperson of the Committee’s subcommittee on street cleanliness and backyard 
decorum (GHVCPTVMsoscbd). “I’m zertain zey vill fit right in, he’s already mowed ze 
back lawn four times,” added Vladimir Storc, respected chairman of the Committee’s 
subcommittee on discipline and contributions to the Republican Party 
(GHVCPTVMsodcrp), and that sealed the issue. Nagging concerns about the Warbler’s 
possible associates were put aside, rumors that he might have hockey in his 
background were ignored, and swift approval of their application came with a 
unanimous rising vote of acclimation. All was tranquil and serene in Hopewell. For the 
moment.  That was Saturday. 

Monday, the GHVCPTVM met in dismay and disarray to consider the dreadful events of 
Sunday afternoon. Mavis Sweat had resigned Sunday evening under pressure, and 
taken to her bed, unavailable for comment at this time. Storc’s house was found sealed 
and reliable sources suggested that he had been urged in the strongest terms to return 
to his native Transvaal. 

The Warbler himself tried to soothe the Committee’s fears at the Monday meeting, but 
failed miserably when it was discovered that one of the rowdy Sunday group was a 
practicing Homo Sapiens, another had been to film school (he had been reported to the 
FBI by both Walt Disney and Ronald Reagan), and still another had a picture of Castro 
on his office wall. One was even known as “The Madam”. Moreover, the write-up for 
#405.4 was still missing.  Many others denied the most damaging allegations - that they 
were acquainted with the infamous Dr. No - but by this time few on the Committee were 
in a mood to believe much. Counsel was retained from the firm of Kissinger, Kissinger, 
Ho, Chi, and Minh with an eye to breaking the contract signed on Saturday. Stay tuned
