Like a Frightened Rat

Description, polemics, comments and lies: The octa-gonal one set a partial Hares 
and Hounds in Princeton. To deafening cries of “Boring”, the pack ran in desultory 
fashion to the parking garage where they ran out of gas and meandered aimlessly, 
arguing over who should climb the stairs to find the arrow all knew lurked on the roof. It 
did, but no one did, and so we didn’t (see it) - it was, but we didn’t, so was it? If an 
arrow is set in the forest with no one to see, does anyone double cross? If your former 
postdoc’s wife erases marks on the road, were they ever really there? 

Thirty minutes of meaningless town running led the pack to the Y (surprise), where Solo 
spied the hare crouching and whimpering under the pines-- all together now -- “LIKE A 
FRIGHTENED RAT.” There 8-Balls cowered, a cornered and beaten hare, a travesty of 
a setter, a landmark of incompetence. What does he do? He runs away, of course. But 
Safe Sweats stands astride his path of retreat, and he doggedly follows, as 8-Balls later 
described it, like the Energizer Bunny. The remainder of the bedraggled pack, now lost 
about a mile away, is beginning to wonder what’s going on. Oblivious to the high drama 
of the chase unfolding a mile or so away, as the Bunny relentlessly tracked the Rat, the 
collective wisdom is to run back through town across the old trail; all are secretly hoping 
for a quick abort. But alas, it is not to be, and marks were finally spotted on Bank St. Off 
we were to Marquand Park, and the Schule für kleine Huns, site this time of an arrow 
from nowhere leading to nowhere. Through the woods, across the stream, and back to 
the pavement. Wacko is lost here. Across the battlefield, into the Institute- it is all too 
inevitable now, as we near the two hour mark. Finally we stagger into the graduate 
college, where the end mercifully awaits us. Enough, already. The beans were good.
