STEVENSON HALL HHH HASH # 123 Date: April 19, 1987 Weather: Unprepossessing Set by: Havens, Hiser Runners: Quackenbush, Wachspress, McCart, Pascal, Kaufman, Franchina, the Geezer, Effross, Hirsch, Smith. Rookie: Wing Lee "First to Cooler" Joe Burns, Pascal, with a lot of first rate help. Description, comments: The start was at PDS and we nestled the Hiserwagen and the Wachspressmobile amidst the BMW's and Mercedes' in the parking lot of this school for future tycoons and tycoonesses. Only the car of Arlene S. President was in character and even it looked out of place as Kaufman was driving. There was trouble at the start as Smith and Quackenbush led us down wrong trails. The right direction was found by Franchina and led us across the Great Road into a watery trail winding through wood, stream, and pipeline. The end lay between Cherry Valley Road and 206 in a dank and dismal cellar filled with water and, eventually, with an assortment of extraordinarily scruffy people. The pack was closely bunched through much of the run until errant calls by Effross and Wachspress led the rest astray into a construction site. Back out to the road and then back in again, following Effross. Even Dan wasn't foolish enough to trust twice to an Effrosian ON ON, and he and the Geezer paralleled along the pipeline in the wake of Pascal. The prospect of a wet spring afternoon and an opportunity to commune with lots of his slimey friends had the LRF very tightly wired today and he was clearly ready to run. Paying attention to marks was far from his mind as he cruised through the swamps hoping for snakes and collecting frogs' eggs. It is said that a deprivation in one area, like intelligence, is often compensated for in another, like long active legs. Wachspress soon gave up trailing and headed back to the pack, which was now mired deep in the woods. The crafty geezer directed Pascal now here, now there, spotting the missed marks with all the guile of his many years on the hash trails. The real trail curved back on itself to run towards them back down the pipeline. Pascal was recalled from an ill-considered dash past the marks to Rt. 206, and helped onto the real trail. The pack could be heard calling faintly in the distance, as the now correctly aimed Pascal found the celler in the woods and with it the cooler. Young legs and old brains, an unbeatable combination. The pack trickled in to jelly beans and the Easter Keg. There were those who resembled Easter eggs themselves -- McCart winning the redface award-- and others so mud covered it was hard to tell. News: Last month the New York Times announced that it had been discovered by a team of brilliant anthropologists that the birth of civilization had been brought about by the discovery of beer. No surprises there. The biennial North American Hash will be held in Philly this September on the weekend of the 4,5,and 6th. The Philly group can't seem to get their act together to send out news but I think those are the correct dates. It is likely to be a thrasher so you might want to save the weekend and plan for a fair amount of recovery time. Watch this space for further announcements.
